What does your day look like with a newborn?

New dd is just over 3 weeks old and I am starting to crave routine back in our lives! She is formula fed and has no real feeding schedule other than as and when she wants it. She sleeps ok, usually waking twice in the night for feeds. And like most newborns she naps pretty much constantly throughout the day.

She usually wakes around 6-7 for her first feed then will go back to sleep. I will either join her depending on what sort of night we've had or get up and do some jobs before her second feed. Dh is still doing school runs for older dc but I will have to take over soon. She usually sleeps until 9/10 and I try and have a shower during this time. After her second feed we just potter around the house a lot. We have had appointments with midwives/health visitors plus lots of visitors over the past few weeks but that's drying up now.

Occasionally we'll go out for a stroll in the afternoon but she's quite unsettled and sometimes it feels like a lot of effort. Dh or I will pick up older dc then it's tea, homework, bath and bed for them. Baby will be with us in the Moses or bouncer chair til we go to bed.

I just don't feel like I'm doing a lot or achieving a lot. I'm tired but I'm also bored and feel like I'm constantly waiting around for the next feed or nappy change. Baby also cries a lot and likes to sleep on me so I find im trapped on the sofa a lot.

I know this is all very normal for this stage. Just wondering if anyone can offer any inspiration for a simple routine or more interesting way to pass the days!

You're only 3 weeks in....cut yourself some slack! How is she sleeping at night?

If you can get up, showered and breakfasted before baby does, why not feed and change them, then head straight out for a walk, meet a friend for coffee or join a baby group/class? Have lunch then use afternoon nap time for chores - stick baby in a sling if they wont settle - no need to be sofa pinned unless you want to be!

Two feeds during the night sounds pretty good going at 3 weeks old.

3 weeks is still incredibly young, please don’t be hard on yourself. Contact naps are lovely - bonding with baby and it forces you to relax, which you still need to do 3 weeks post birth!

Once visitors dried up I joined a few groups (baby was 8 weeks old) that added a little structure to our days, if we weren’t at a group I’d make sure we went for a walk - fresh air is good for mum and baby.

She will have her last bottle around 10/11 then wake up at about 1 and 4. Then again for the morning feed at about 6/7. She sometimes takes a while to settle back down after a feed so I'm pretty worn out.

I just feel like im being a bit lazy which is silly but I suppose I just like structure and at the moment it feels like I'm just waiting around to see when she'll next wake up for a feed. The mornings are pretty chaotic with dc getting ready for school, trying to get ready myself and doing baby's feed.
