How do you snap out of the Monday blues

Got that Monday feeling and don't want a moody start to the day with negativity clouding my work.

How do you snap out of it if you feel like this?

I turn my thinking around: instead of the weekend being over, the week and all the possibilities it brings are just starting. This will be the week I diet wonderfully, save money excellently and be an all round better person. And I do try very hard.

It rarely comes to pass but it gets me to Wednesday at least feeling good about myself and what’s happened in the week so far.

Though if Tuesday is tough sometimes the wine comes out and I’m a total derelict for the rest of the week. 😂

I’m planning how to get a job I don’t feel so stressed about. So I’ll be working on that today. Or at least thinking a bit/hoping to hear back from something which will help with that.

Sing loudly to a feel good song
Promise yourself a treat later
Wear an outfit that makes you feel like a princess
Find a job you love that you can’t wait to get to
Spray on some nice perfume

These are mine HTH ❤️

Are you wfh or in the workplace/office?

I am pretty organised and I make sure my Monday is well planned so that it is not stressful when I start. I wfh so I always put the news on the radio in the background to stop it feeling lonely - it always feels so quiet after the weekend! If I am not in meetings I phone a close colleague just to see if there is any work stuff I need to know about and any info about our upcoming reorganisation. I go through all my emails and plan my week out. I try to start the week calmly.

mondayagainyay · 16/05/2022 08:16

Yes WFH and would probably be worse if I had to slap on a fake smile and head into an office.

I like the idea of taking the time to plan.

It's like the negative thoughts take over and all I can think of is they ways that the week may go wrong.

Following for ideas.

There is too much to do at the moment. I am trying to protect my sanity and weekends by just finishing at a reasonable time on a Friday and not working at the weekend, but it means a more stressful Monday unfortunately.

carefullycourageous · 16/05/2022 08:29

I have blocked out 9-10 every Monday to review emails and that automatically makes me unavailable for early meetings. Fuckers who book you for Monday morning meetings (unless customer-facing) drive me mad.

I am now PT so am not in the same (hellish) situation I was two months ago, but when I was FT I basically forced myself to work at a more sensible pace because it is headfrying to work 40+ hours at high intensity. Work is unsustainable if it takes more out of you each week than your non-working time puts back.

HappyGoDucky · 16/05/2022 08:32

Don't work Mondays?

For me I get Wednesday morning blues (I work weds- Sat). I haven't got any real suggestions but once I get going I'm fine and I look forward to my week's half way point as I've broken the back of it by then.

U2HasTheEdge · 16/05/2022 08:35

I get the feeling of dread too. Sitting here with 15 minutes to go, trying to pull myself out of it. I tend to find that once I have got going I am OK though.

I'm thinking about working longer days so I have can have a day off during the week to look forward to.

Fernsinthegarden · 16/05/2022 08:37

As a previous poster said I’d block out the first two hours for reviewing emails and stuff that happened over the weekend but I’d also block out the last hour or so on a Friday and actively plan out my Monday, making space for long running tasks with a few nice easy ones popped in there too. Going into work feeling purposeful and in control always felt better and less like I was drowning within minutes! I found it was helpful when my boss would ask what I was doing or try to saddle me with even more jobs that I could literally whip out a list and look super efficient and well organised!

DelurkingAJ · 16/05/2022 08:41

My manager, who is fab, told me very firmly at my last appraisal to book out a couple of hours on Friday afternoon and use it to review everything in my calendar and ask:

  • what do I want the outcome of this meeting to be?

  • have I done the work I need to for it?

I have no idea why I’d never done it before, it felt like an unnecessary luxury and not proper working, somehow, but now I do it it means I never have a panic on a Monday.

I do realise that this isn’t possible in some jobs but if it is then it’s a glorious approach and does mean that I am better prepared (and can sometimes cancel meetings if events have overtaken their purpose).

How's the week been? Surprising how quick the week goes by even when the regular Monday dread appears so frequently.
