AIBU to bath baby daily?

DD (10 months) has had daily baths since birth (missed the odd day if unwell etc.) AIBU to bath her daily? Hair wash 2-3 per week (lots of hair)?

DS (9) is the same

How often do you bath yours?

At the newborn stage a bath would sometimes be the only way to stop him crying, but beyond that a daily bath strikes me as overkill. In fact most GPs don't recommend it as that can inflame certain skin conditions.

florianfortescue · 16/05/2022 10:14

My 3-year-old has a bath every night because she comes back from nursery looking like a Victorian chimney sweep.

I give my 9-week-old a bath once a week and wash him with cotton wool and warm water the rest of the time. He looks and smells clean so that is good enough for me.

Skinnermarink · 16/05/2022 10:49

Im talking about once your baby starts solids particularly- we might skip the very odd night if he’s overtired or not feeling well but yeah, every night. Don’t use bubble bath often though.

autienotnaughty · 16/05/2022 12:42

Every other day. Top n tail the other day. Now he's older 3/4 times a week with hair wash 2/3 times a week.

vitahelp · 16/05/2022 13:00

We bath DD every night and have done since she was a baby (nearly 4 years old now). We wash her hair every night too but might start cutting back as she is keeping her hair cleaner now (no food/paint in hair etc).
It is part of her routine and she enjoys bath time. Plus she goes to nursery and they come home with this nursery smell that only a bath can get rid of.

It’s not lazy. It’s recommended not to bathe children every day. Kids shouldn’t need baths to help them fall asleep.

By that token they shouldn’t need a night light, a bedtime milk, a soother or a story either then but it’s all a nice part of the bedtime process, if your baby enjoys it and it’s not affecting their skin 🤷🏻‍♀️

vitahelp · 17/05/2022 10:09

Never heard that it is recommended not to bathe kids every day, I can't understand why that would be!

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 17/05/2022 10:11

Every day is fine unless it’s affecting their skin. I’ve gone through phases of doing it every night and phases of only doing it once a week on a Sunday! Do whatever suits you!

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 17/05/2022 10:13

i make my teens have a shower every day and my primary aged children have a bath every other day.

It's dries the skin out

FantaLover · 18/05/2022 20:06

That's simply not true of all children @AllThingsServeTheBeam !

We bathed dc every night until the age where she started showering alone each day & she had & continues to have the most beautiful, perfect skin
She never once had nappy rash or cradle cap or any other skin problem & she's a teen now

I don't think it's nice not to bath children very regularly.& you can tell. People thi bk you can t but you can..
When dd was primary school aged I often had to open the window in her room after playdates with pals. The room would reek of unwashed hair - it's a very particular smell

Where did I say it did?

Gizacluethen · 18/05/2022 20:18

Once or twice a week. His skin couldn't take daily baths. When he starts nursery we'll probably up it because apparently they get filthy, hopefully his skin will be more hardy by then, but he never smells and doesn't look any more grubby the day before a bath than he does an hour after a bath 🤣

marshmallowbooks · 18/05/2022 20:19

We are 2-4x a week kind of family (well, the kids. Adults shower daily)

DogsAndGin · 18/05/2022 20:26

You know best. But in regard to your 9yo: I wish the kids in my class bathed daily! I’m a teacher - I dread summer for the stench of the classroom! So, thank you!

Poor kids

reluctantbrit · 18/05/2022 20:55

Bath 2-3 times a week unless in Summer. Otherwise washed properly with warm water, soap and flannel. Poo explosions were showered off. Wipes were for going out or wiping off any sticky remains and then washing the bum.

she had mild skin issues and the GP and health visitor both agreed to a less bath routine.

we moved to showers when DD was able to stand properly, 18 months?

SickAndTiredAgain · 18/05/2022 21:12

I used to bathe DD daily while on mat leave, purely because it gave me something to do!

Cantfollowmeround · 18/05/2022 21:18

Does it cost anyone else £10 to fill a bath with hot water? That would be £300 a month in baths for me and I cant afford it.

Skinnermarink · 18/05/2022 22:03

Errr no…. That doesn’t seem right?!

we don’t have one admittedly, we fill a baby bath.

Glitterblue · 18/05/2022 23:17

We always bathed DD every night as part of her bedtime routine, and sometimes as a toddler when still in nappies, I gave her a quick bath in the morning just to freshen her up after being in a nappy all night. She's now 12 and has a shower every morning before school.

Why do you need to fill the bath completely?

breatheintheamazing · 19/05/2022 05:13

I didn't think you were supposed to bath very young babies daily due to their sensitive skin and washing away natural oils etc? 2-3 times per week is what I read was recommended

15 month old twins go in every other night - only daily during summer if they've had sun cream on.

I don't see the need to do it daily

It doesn’t cost us as much as £10 a month. What are you heating with?!
