Anyone else have a fuzzy head after only one drink these days?

Heading towards 40 so done a fair share of boozing. I find that only one beer or glass of wine gives me a fuzzy head the next day like I know I've had a drink. Hardly worth having the one and that is generally what I've done lately is just not bother. Anyone else find this?

Yep. Had two glasses of fizz last night and I was drunk.

Squeezedsquash · 15/05/2022 07:44

Yes. I’m 40. In my early twenties I thought nothing of a bottle of wine at a time. I haven’t drunk much (May 1-2 units a month) since I was 30 and if I have a drink in the evening it’s not fun in the morning. Afternoon Pimms is ok though :)

don’t know if it’s my age or being unaccustomed to alcohol.

MolliciousIntent · 15/05/2022 07:45

I'm 29, but I found this following not drinking during pregnancy, but only with wine (not a beer person). Didn't happen when I had a G&T. This made me think that it's a dehydration issue, so I started drinking a pint of water whenever I had a glass of wine, and it stopped.

blobby10 · 15/05/2022 08:02

Yep! I'm 53 and if I have two glasses of wine or two g&t then I'm up all night tossing and turning with a spinning head, sweats and churning stomach!

StroppyTop · 15/05/2022 08:05

Yep, 50 and any booze makes my face go bright red, I get a headache half an hour later and then sleep terribly. Day drinking is better, oddly.

mynameiscalypso · 15/05/2022 08:08

Yup. Approaching 40 here, one drink last night and feel 'off' today. I don't often drink so it might just be a tolerance thing. I do agree with PP that day drinking is better although even then I have a two drink limit generally.

gracedentssketty · 15/05/2022 08:14

Definitely. I’m almost 44 and have really noticed it in the last 6 months. I’m thinking of giving up entirely tbh as just not worth it

parrotonthesofa · 15/05/2022 08:33

Yep. Had two drinks last night snd i feel rough today. Doesn't happen every time so. I convince myself it's ok to drink again. But I think it's just time to give up, not worth it!

ZenNudist · 15/05/2022 08:41

Nope mid 40s. Don't drink in the week, have months of abstinence throughout the year, can get very drunk on small amounts of alcohol if I'm not careful sometimes but other times if I eat loads I can drink loads still.

Managed a massive meal and a whole bottle of red last night because went on rare night out. Feel OK today.

Stressedout65 · 15/05/2022 08:57

1 glass of prosecco at lunchtime yesterday & 2 glasses of white wine last night & I'm shattered with a headache. 20 years ago I used to be hard core partying & binge drinking, can think of nothing worse now!

Simonjt · 15/05/2022 09:03

Three pints and one cocktail last night, think I might die.

cottagegardenflower · 15/05/2022 09:06

I e always been like this. Tea total now.

mymindisamuckingfuddle · 15/05/2022 09:16

Yep. Am 37. I spent my late teens and early twenties binge drinking cheap booze wildly and had a huge tolerance. Very few hangovers unless I really overdid it or smoked excessively when you could still smoke inside (which made the dehydration worse!).

Now? One/one and a half Friday night glass of reasonably nice £10-12 a bottle Sauv with dinner and I've got a headache the next day. No smoking these days either, not for years and years.

When I think of the alcoholic vinegar I used to drink and the quantity of it (wasn't unusual to sink a bottle each before we even left the house!) and compare it to my nice once a week treat glass of wine it beggars belief really!

It must be a combination of age, lowered tolerance due to lower intake and possibly abstaining for a few years whilst pregnant/breastfeeding/tiny baby age.

I wonder what the science is behind it.

I agree with the day drinking and think that may be the way to go.

Since I had covid I feel dehydrated a lot (definitely not diabetic) and I don’t really drink anymore. Just soooo unpleasant

DinasCopUniform · 15/05/2022 21:46

I have just been invited on a boozy night out that I'm going to decline for this very reason. I used to love a good piss-up, but the older I get (I'm almost 52), the less I can handle it. The hangovers are the worst I've ever had, and it takes me a week to feel normal.

I'm just not bothering anymore. Luckily I've only ever really been a binge drinker, few times a year, so I won't miss it!

It's mostly because dealing with alcohol is a two-stage process and as you get older your liver gets slower at doing the second half of it. That means that you have more of the intermediate chemical that causes a lot of the symptoms of hangover (acetaldehyde) hanging about waiting to be processed.

Either that or God hates us.

SoManyTshirts · 15/05/2022 22:28

Yes but was probably mid-fifties when it hit. I just don’t bother, I don’t like the fuzzy feeling and I don’t get a high any more.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/05/2022 12:31

Yes hangovers lasting for days. I've not had a drink since Boxing Day and don't miss it at all.

Questiontellme · 16/05/2022 12:40

No not after one, but no way can I drink as much as I used to - same age as you. Probably a good thing, I find its more the beer fear now (a rather cosy way of describing what is actually heart racing panicky feelings, depression and anxiety) can't even remember getting it this bad in 20's early thirties.

I find it's worse with certain drinks and then duh worked out it's those with a higher ABV although if I have a night on cocktails I no way feel as bad as if I have drunk white wine or rose. Champagne/Cava and red not as bad as the former either.

theMedicinalPorpoise · 16/05/2022 13:27

Yes. I'm 43 and can no longer drink wine (any colour, any amount) without getting a headache pretty much instantly.
A gin and tonic is still ok though. But only one.
