To ask for further yellow sticker reductions?

I was in Sainsbury’s today and I picked up 2x tuna steaks that were reduced from £8 to £5-something. I clocked as I was shopping that the 75% reductions were taking place in the deli aisle so grabbed a few bits, did the rest of my shop and went back to the meat/fish aisle just as those reductions were taking place and bagged an £11 8 pack of chicken breasts for £2.70.

As I was there the man reducing handed over something to another customer so I decided to ask about my tuna. He agreed to reduce, was very pleasant and I got it for £1.99 instead.

I told my DP about it and he thought it was a bit cheeky to ask. I don’t think it is to just ask but would accept if they said “no, store policy says we can’t”. That’s happened to me in M&S before and I’ve never asked again. This is the first time I’ve asked in Sainsbury’s.

So WIBU to ask?

Whilst answering, share your best ever yellow sticker item discounts. It’s a dull topic otherwise and I am genuinely interested (and envious) of the best bargains.

(Mine wasn’t food, but a £40 pair of jeans yellow stickered at £1 in Topshop many, many years ago).

I don't think it's wrong to ask; the worst that can happen is that they say no.

Sparklingbrook · 14/05/2022 19:26

I know that some supermarkets don't allow staff to 'reduce on demand' and can get a disciplinary for it. The reason being that they could be reducing for a friend or family member that they have told to come in specially.

Confusedashell2 · 14/05/2022 19:27

I got a 2x 4kg leg of lamb for £2 each (down from about £24 each at the time iirc).

A cooked chicken 88p in Morrissons. No I wouldnt ask although i have in a small m & s when it was just sandwiches. I used to love a yellow sticker but these days I see crowds of people hanging around the person with the price gun and it makes me feel sad for them trying to do their job in peace. And sad for the people hanging around them so now I keep away unless there is no one there.

Not unreasonable to ask, I probably wouldn't have had the front to do so, but good on you.

My best bargain was probably the joint of chateaubriand beef I bought in Aldi last Christmas Eve.. it had been £40 but I got it for 75% off. It was absolutely delicious as well, we had it Christmas Day.

Another great bargain years ago now was a full size pool table we bought for the games room. It was reduced to about £70 when we bought it (from something ridiculous like £350). We had it for 10+ years, I sold it on last year for £150! 🤣

jewishmum · 14/05/2022 19:32

I've done it. No shame.

grenlei · 14/05/2022 19:32

Got it wrong sorry, it was a rolled sirloin (not sure where I got chateaubriand from!)

Yes, I would hate to be the person with that gun with everyone getting in their personal space. I have a friend who used to work in a supermarket and she said they used to take it all out the back to re reduce because they got pestered all the time. Especially at Christmas.

£55 taste the difference Turkey for £15 on Chris eve!

Calmdown14 · 14/05/2022 19:39

I think it was okay in this context. Sounds like he was working his way round as it had hit the time for the next level of reduction and just hadn't made it to the but you wanted to buy.
If you'd asked at a different point it may have been cheeky and got a different answer

xyzandabc · 14/05/2022 19:39

Several years ago our local Waitrose over ordered Christmas turkeys. On Christmas Eve I picked one up reduced from £85 to £7. Cooked it on boxing Day, portions it up and I think it lasted until about September in the freezer

Lovemusic33 · 14/05/2022 19:40

If you don’t ask you don’t get? Always worth asking, worse they could say is ‘no’.

ItallwentwrongwhenBowieleft · 14/05/2022 19:40

Found my best ever yellow stickers last weekend.
No idea why they were reduced so much but they came in very handy for celebrating my daughter's Graduation this week Smile

I got some free veg on Easter Monday in Asda
It was past best before so they couldn't sell it so they put it outside in boxes saying help yourself and that they had offered everything they could to homeless shelters extra on the Saturday night.

ApertureGLaDOS · 14/05/2022 19:43

@ItallwentwrongwhenBowieleft Wow! I’m really surprised to see booze that cheap. I did grab a couple of bottles of English Sparkling from Lidl last year at £6 a bottle and was pretty pleased but that’s a proper wild goose chase right there!

I’m also seeing a trend here in Xmas buys. I think the best thing is that yellow stickers are reduced 3 days earlier than needed because of store closures which is really helpful.

Tiger baguettes reduced to 15p each in Tesco.

Afolnerd · 14/05/2022 19:53

I work for a store that discounts in a similar way. If I see customers looking at items that I haven’t got to yet I will offer to mark it down further for them.

I wouldn’t have an issue with the way you asked.

The ones that crowd round you demanding to know the prices while you are trying to work and get in the way are told no.
