To be fed up with food?

I'm one of those irritatingly healthy eaters, love good food and never had to diet. But the past year or two I seem to have just gone off everything. I have a normal appetite, but just so so sick of everything I cook.

We (just myself and DP) cut out most processed food long ago, so tend to make everything, plus sauces, any baking, etc from scratch. We like doing it so that's ok. But 80% of my plate is basically vegetables, the rest protein. Sounds good, but I am just sick to death of it.
I have tried all manner or recipes, from all cultures, and am still fed up.

I gave up bread many years ago and I can't recall why. Pasta and noodles also. Possibly due to hearing they were empty calories so didn't need them.

So there was this revelation when a friend made me a toasted slice of sourdough with a healthy topping of asparagus, mozzarella, mushroom, pepper, garlic, spinach - and it blew my mind with the taste! I can't recreate this without bread - i tried and tried and it isn't happening. It was the last thing I truly loved to eat and it made the veggies so delicious.
A week later, inspired by my reaction she made me another sourdough slice with a poached egg, avocado, cress, asparagus and mushrooms. Again I was in utter heaven, my head blown off with the taste.

When I roast vegetables with chicken breast, or make a soup, or various other healthy veg recipes I am so bored, uninspired and unsatisfied. And I am a good, adventurous cook! It's puzzling me.

Since we don't eat processed (hydrogenated oils) much I have shied away from sourdough and pitta. But it's like life is too bloody short to be this repressed. I suppose somewhere along the line I have been swept up in the 'good food bad food' evangelicalism and I just want to eat healthy but with more joy and variety than this!

So you google sourdough and it's all about glycemic index and baaaaaad calories. I am slim, otherwise healthy, I am sure eating some fucking grains a few times a week won't hurry me off to the undertakers.

Sorry, needed to get that out Grin

I don’t eat bread as am gluten free and most substitutes are awful
I think you are just bored with your current repertoire
we’ve introduced more variety by using spice boxes and less traditional meal combos - it’s working so far
I do like pasta still but use pea or lentil pasta or even beetroot

Phineyj · 14/05/2022 20:13

It's probably not this but I had similar issues for a while (wasn't eating such a healthy diet though). It turned out I had endometriosis and due to knock on effects on the stomach it had completely changed my stomach acidity. For a while all I could eat was tomato soup and green apples.

So sorry wrong thread

The only people who shouldn't be eating carbs are coeliacs.
Don't bother telling me different, I will fight you 😁

fist or sword fight? 😂

coeliacs can eat carbs, just not ones with gluten in :)

so there’s nobody who can’t actually eat any sort of carb at all. Unless there’s some incredibly rare metabolic disorder I’ve never heard of 🤔.

warofthemonstertrucks · 14/05/2022 20:22

Just go and buy yourself a loaf
Of bread

TopBitchoftheWitches · 14/05/2022 20:25

Just eat the nice stuff 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Muezza · 14/05/2022 20:34

Sourdough bread is exquisite. I like to top it with really ripe brie and tonnes of rocket. Or just butter. Or toasted with a poached egg. If I was on death row, a freshly baked loaf of sourdough would be my last meal.

I have to cut it into slices and freeze it though overwise I will literally eat the entire loaf for breakfast lunch and dinner.

rickandmorts · 14/05/2022 20:40

Why don't you try making your own sourdough? It's literally flour, water and salt, nothing bad in it. Can be tricky to get the hang of it but if you do it regularly and keep your culture well fed and active then you can soon get the hang of it. There's loads of resources on the internet about how to make it. Might this make you feel less anxious about eating bread if you know exactly what's in it?

JolieJ · 14/05/2022 20:42

What do you do when you go out to eat? I'm usually healthyish at home but when I'm out for a meal I have to eat good food otherwise what's the point

Ok, just to put something to rest here: my diet has not been boring or restricted 'for years'. We just cut out junk and heavily processed stuff, and I gave up bread and pasta because I believed the hype that they were useless.

How this translates to a disorder is fascinating tbh, but this is AIBU so i gotta take it on the chin!

My diet involved lots of potatoes, too, I make my own sauces with cream, butter, cheese, my own veg stock, cottage pies, omelettes, etc, and have many tasty recipes of my own, so in no way was there any restricting in my habits. To cut out junk is not a restriction, it was a healthy choice, and that's ok.
I also enjoyed chocolate, my own biscuits, cake, sausages, all the lovely fatty things with some sugar.
I would hardly need to see my gp about restricting food Grin

I said i was bored with my food and didnt enjoy it, but it's certainly plentiful! And the thing is, I did used to love it.
I even wonder if this is a sign of meno....
I have just changed, it seems, and need to incorporate some other things now. I am just sick to death of everything lately.

Thanks to everyone for the tips and for your encouragement to hog all the bread. I have my lovely sourdough loaf here, which will be filled with turkey, cranberry sauce and all sorts of things shortly.

I hope everyone who’d already diagnosed you with a fake ‘condition’ reads this!

So many assumptions…

*I hope everyone who’d already diagnosed you with a fake ‘condition’ reads this!

to start, orthorexia is not a “fake” condition.

second, o/p originally said all she eats is protein and veg, having cut everything else out. No one was assuming, that is what they based their replies on. If she had said she eats like she does in the drip feed, the replies would be a lot different. Except the eat all the bread thing :)

The term orthorexia has only been around for 20 years or so. Just because someone names something doesn’t make it a thing.

There are plenty of cases and even documentaries on orthorexia if you would like to learn more about it. It's definitely 'real'.

Did cancer not exist before there was a name for it?

well OP has listed these things in the past tense, her diet ‘involved’ all those foods and she ‘enjoyed’ chocolate. ‘For years’. So yeah, still not convinced.

dontknowhow2help · 14/05/2022 21:46

I have bagels for breakfast daily with lurpak and peanut butter. I get so bored of thinking what to have for dinner (no restrictions/allergies) but couldn't go without my daily bread! BMI of 19 and I'm in my 40s so hopefully it's not doing too much harm.

TheGetaway · 14/05/2022 21:54

Sourdough has the highest protein of any bread. Grains are good for you!

Mossstitch · 14/05/2022 22:08

If you make everything from scratch bread should be simple and does not contain hydrogenated fat but if you feel its too hard Google Hugh fernley whitingstall's flatbread recipe to start with, simply flour, little salt, olive oil and water. Great for wraps, with hummus, daal or makes a great flatbread pizza topped with homemade sauce (saute onion in olive oil, add pack of passata and simmer plus toppings of choice with some fresh mozzerella😋)

I’m not saying there aren’t people who get obsessed with healthy eating. But why do we have to everything a name? It just becomes something to ‘blame’ - oh, it’s my orthorexia…

If you’re comparing it to cancer I think you’re being a bit obtuse.

Lemons1571 · 14/05/2022 22:13

I feel like the only person in the world who doesn’t like bread or sourdough. I also mostly eat protein, lightest Philadelphia (hardly any calories) and salad. When I eat bread it feels so heavy and uncomfortable in my stomach for 24 hours.

I do eat a small bowl of cereal once a day though. Does that provide sufficient carbs??

Titsywoo · 14/05/2022 22:22

I really like Crosta Mollica Pane Pugliese - they sell it in waitrose. It's lovely toasted and only has 5 ingredients.

Talliah · 14/05/2022 22:22

Orthorexia is not really much different to any other eating disorder. It’s obsessive control over your diet, whether that’s in restricting calories or restricting the specific foods that you eat.

The fact that the op is experiencing so much angst over whether she can start to eat the odd slice of bread indicates to me that her attitude to food has slipped from normal to overly controlling. It is really not normal to need to seek approval from strangers online in order to feel able to eat noodles and sourdough occasionally.

Just Gluten, Rye, Barley and for some, oats. Still leaves me corn, buckwheat, millet, quinoa, potatoes, teff, Amaranth, shortgrain rice, long grain rice, wild rice and more rice...

Carbs are gooooooood.

knowinglesseveryday · 14/05/2022 23:36

I eat pretty healthily, although I've gained some weight over the last year. Sourdough is fine. I buy mine from a decent baker, as I can't be bothered to make it. It seems complicated and long winded. I tend to eat a slice and not two, eg on an open sandwich. Bulgar wheat is nice, as is rice. Both of those are healthy if whole grain.

mnnewbie111 · 15/05/2022 08:03

Christ, just eat the god damn bread. This makes me sad
