To think the government have lost touch with reality?

Johnson wants us all back on the office; meanwhile Rees-Mogg is waging war on the civil service, leaving snarky PA notes, telling them to get into the office and cutting 20% of jobs. I can't even imagine how low morale in the civil service must be.

At the same time my industry is finding it very tough to recruit and most applicants expect hybrid/remote working.

I think the government are seriously out of touch with reality here.

IABU - get into the office, workshy stay at home dossiers

IANBU - hybrid/home working is here to stay and they are being dinosaurs

So @NannyGythaOgg, what is it that makes the opposition unelectable now that there’s no longer the ubiquitous “Yeah but Corbyn …”? The last time I looked they were well ahead in the polls.

Knittingchamp · 14/05/2022 18:44

Listen, this entire Tory term has been one long Alan B'Stard New Statesman episode and it is zero percent surprising for anyone and everyone on here who grew up in the darkly classic poll tax 'let the old people freeze this winter' Thatcher years. Since when the hell have the Tories ever been IN touch with reality?

Sarahconnor1 · 14/05/2022 18:58

Jacob Rees-Mogg Minister for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiency doesn't appear to use IT. I assume he has someone in his office print out all his emails and then type his response.

He also has at least 4 SPADs working for him

This is the man lecturing civil servants.

Yes of. COURSE adding a further £300 to household budget for a pointless commute it exactly what the doctor ordered for a country in a cost of living crisis.

They are deranged.

Civil Service needs to modernise, says man who appears to be immersive LARPing as a 1940s civil servant.

Civil service needs to work more efficiently, says man who was photographed napping on the job.

Civil Service is too bloated and needs thinning out, says an who travels with four special advisors and brought an entourage to TV interviews.

DH works in civil service and keeps losing candidates he's trying to recruit because they want to work from home and he has to tell them they might have to be in the office 40% of the time, even though all jobs in his department can be done completely without problems from home. In fact the tech is so bad in the office, zoom meetings work better when people are at home than when they're in the office....
He and all his superiors know there is no reason for these jobs to return to the office apart from to prop up Pret a Manger and similar, and make sure the privatised rail services give profits to shareholders.

The office space for CS has been cut in the last few years so there's little point in coming into the office anyway, because there physically isn't room for your entire team to come in on the same day. The result is you go to the office and sit on video calls all day.

Eddiesferret · 14/05/2022 20:12

I am a cs.. my ream consists of 25 people.. we have space for 5 ...

What would the tax payer prefer.. an extortionate rent for extra space or that we pay for our own from home at a tax deductible of £6 per week ??

You could cut 90% of the public sector overnight and 90% of the population wouldn't even notice. It's a vast inefficient monolith.

The NHS employs more than a million people. I think the impact of reducing that to 100k might be very noticeable.

And schools - a 90% cut in school staff would be pretty noticeable, likewise police and fire service. People already moan about the poor service they get from their councils, it would be infinitely worse, as would waiting times to speak to anyone at the DWP or HMRC. And how would you fancy having your bins emptied every 10 weeks, instead of weekly, or 20 weeks, instead of fortnightly?

mynamesnotMa · 15/05/2022 06:07

They are just putting the final nails in their Tory coffins to hand the country back to Labour in a right old state. Then repeat.

Scurryfunge12 · 15/05/2022 06:21

They were never in touch with reality in the first place, so YABU 🤣
