Torn on whether to apply for my dream job

Hi

Posting for traffic. I’m a HCP, two years experience. I’m currently band 5 and I do love my job and team, and have a great manager. However, whilst this was my dream job as a student it is long, hard shifts and physically and mentally intense. I don’t see myself doing this for more than a couple of years max.

A job which doesn’t come up often has just been advertised. It’s as part of an outreach team working with a specific population group, a population group I wish to work more closely with. The job is something I’m passionate about.

However, I am relatively newly qualified and this job is nhs band 6. Unlike most industries my profession frowns upon going for promotions at this level of experience. It is also a post where they probably have a band 5 in mind. That being said, the NHS is the shortest it’s ever been and my experience throughout the pandemic has accelerated my progress. I am still ‘junior’ though and have lots to learn.

I would be sad to leave my lovely colleagues but this new job would be much more stable and better working hours with many opportunities for progression.

Any views welcome. I just finished a night shift so apologies if badly written.
thanks

YWBU not to apply!! You have nothing at all to lose. What would you advise a friend who wrote this exact post?

Nhs HCP here. 2 years is plenty to apply for band 6. Go for it!

Hoolahulahoop · 13/05/2022 20:19

Go for it !!!

JurasicPerks · 13/05/2022 20:21

If you dont apply, you definitely wont get it! You have to be in it to win it, so get applying.

StiggyZardust · 13/05/2022 20:23

Apply for the job! Worry about it if you are offered an interview, at this stage you have nothing to lose. Good luck.

Amoozbooze · 13/05/2022 20:24

Definitely apply! Being frowned on isn't a good reason to not try to reach higher! Go for it! Who do you think would be frowning anyway? Few people will have your application, it is personal professional information. You will meet nice colleagues everywhere, if you get on well there is no reason why you won't stay in touch, again... Go for it! Good luck!

Just apply.

Band 5 here, also agree with PP two years is absolutely fine to apply for a band six. Plenty of my uni cohort were band six after two years.

Thanks everyone.

I’ve been in my current job 14 months after a traumatic start (covid) and I’ve made true friends at work. However, I’ve nothing to lose from applying. If I don’t get it I stay with my lovely team.

Applying now

Absolutely apply. Nothing ventured, nothing gained & all that.

Good luck

ystaberia · 13/05/2022 20:39

Apply.
At the very least it's a way of getting your name known in a service you'd like to work in.
At best, you'll get the job.
Win:win

Thanks guys.

Application is submitted.

I don’t think I’ll get considered but stranger things have happened. And as PP said it gets my name and interest declared. There’s a potential option for it as a training role too which would suit me. I emailed the team lead months ago and he said to get in touch for a visit when I apply - so I will do this.
