New Oven smells of gas

A new oven in a private rented property i'm living in, gives off a very strong chemical type gas smell when i put it on. At first i thought it might be a new oven smell, where the coating is burning off some of the elements etc, so i put it on a few times for between 20 mins and over an hour, and ventilated the house at the same time - the smell didn't really die down. I persevered as i didn't want to complain in case it was just because the oven was new, however i then started putting food in it to cook, and even with a couple of windows open, my eyes started to sting, and i noticed the food was taking longer than i would expect to cook. There was also a hissing sound by the door of the oven while it was on. The smell also remained.

I got worried and called British Gas to check it, as they will come out for free to assess it - they couldn't find any gas leak, but said there may be an issue with the appliance itself and a gas certified engineer would need to come out to check that. They also disconnected the oven and left a report with it. So the landlord then called out a gas certified engineer to come on a priority basis who charged him £120 - while he was there he said some remedial work needs to be done, as the install engineer did not install it to current safety standards (although he said it was still installed safely). This engineer could not find any leak, although he did not even switch the oven on and the smell is only detectable when the oven is on. He said it could be a problem with the applicance itself but he said the remedial work would have to be done, before he would even touch it. My landlord said he now has to pay over £500 in total costs to get back to where he was to start with and is not happy.

I'm now starting to question myself if i did the right thing and should have just not used the oven, and left it. I know what i smelt wasn't normal but its hard to describe smells - i have used a gas oven many times before and not smelt anything, though they weren't brand new.

Does anyone have any experience of this or know what i should do, it's really starting to stress me out now.

Shouldn’t there have been a gas inspection prior to moving in?

You’ve done nothing wrong at all.

It's a private rental - apparently i should have asked for or being given a gas certificate, which i didn't and haven't been given but even if there was one, that wouldn't have covered a fault appliance, if a fault can be found

We got a new oven about 5 months ago and it still smells bad. We paid a lot for it, researched the brand etc but it's a crap oven and stinks still now after 5 months albeit not as strong.

If its a new appliance it will be covered so the landlord shouldnt have to pay. He goes back to original installer who rectifies the bad job he did. Not your problem, all your Landlors and don't let him stress you out and dont keep apologising either.

If you think you smell gas you call the emergency line. Always. You did the right thing.

Your landlord would be less happy if you set fire to t he place.

Whoever came out first should have told you why it wasn't safe (since they said it wasn't a leak). Second engineer can't really do much, he's not going to want to void the warranty. Landlord should have called the manufacturer/installer first since you were told it was the new appliance.
