How come U.K is one of the top five contributors for money to eurovision when we are in a total mess?

Was just reading about this on b.b.c news, that U.K qualifies to enter as we give so much money to the contest, musical dross for the best part, that for the last upteen years we have been snubbed time and time again.
Just why are we wasting money on this self indulgent shite in this day and age?
Wouldn't it be better to drop out and keep the money in this country for our own people who need financial help?

I doubt it’s very much money in the grand scheme of things.

CuteOrangeElephant · 12/05/2022 23:05

Eurovision is actually relatively cheap for what it is. On a previous thread someone compared it to an episode of Call the midwife.

People seem to like the British song this year. I hope it does well.

user1471517900 · 12/05/2022 23:05

It doesn't cost that much compared to a lot of other TV shows that would be in its place. And it gets a massive audience share for the whole evening.

Millions love it.

CuteOrangeElephant · 12/05/2022 23:06

Also I believe it all comes from the European Broadcasting Union, so not participating doesn't mean you don't pay.

UmbilicusProfundus · 12/05/2022 23:07

Lols. It probably boosts the economy anyway. Feel free to have a look at the threads from this time last year, and before, and before

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 12/05/2022 23:07

It’s paid for by the BBC, not the government - and it’s only about £250k. Show me the other programmes the BBC can make for that kind of budget that will get 8 million viewers across four hours on a Saturday night.

Ocsetldil · 12/05/2022 23:07

And the EBU is not the EU which is why we haven’t left.

iheartmybeachhut · 12/05/2022 23:09

Ah, I'm not aware of the costing but it still seems a bit daft just to make our selves look daft propping up the bottom of the pile, still I guess someone's got to do it 😀

I honestly think the UK will come on the left of the board this year.

DressingGownofDoom · 12/05/2022 23:10

Should we just cut out the arts altogether? Everything that give us a bit of light relief?

Bywayofanupdate · 12/05/2022 23:13

You do realise it's not just the UK in a mess?

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 12/05/2022 23:16

Eurovision is the stupidest pile of wank conceivable but it’s cheap tv compared to sports and we mostly lose at those too - especially the ones we invented.

iheartmybeachhut · 12/05/2022 23:16

Def not cutting the arts dressing I'm a regular culture vulture for music, theatre, ballet and opera I enjoy all of it.
I was merely commenting on costs but it seems that it's not that expensive after all.
Thanks for educating me everyone 🙂

Because it's not a payment for the Eurovision, it's a payment to the European Broadcasting Union. The Eurovision is only a small part of what they do.

WeOnlyTalkAboutBruno · 12/05/2022 23:30

Pipe down. Eurovision is awesome.

Dudds · 12/05/2022 23:32

Apparently our entry this year is very much in the running to come top ten.

WeOnlyTalkAboutBruno · 12/05/2022 23:34

Last year Bill Bailey said he was up for having a crack at it. I’m disappointed that this has not happened.

scruffanddodge · 12/05/2022 23:35

I have a good feeling about our song this year. Left side of the board I think.

iPreferBooks · 12/05/2022 23:40

You do realise we’re the second favourite to win this year? 😂

If you are not aware of the costs, why are you complaining about the costs?

Pyewhacket · 13/05/2022 00:07

Totally agree, it's a crock of shite that we should have thrown to the kurb years ago.

Exactly. Why start a thread on something you know nothing about?

Pyewhacket · 13/05/2022 00:07

Totally agree, it's a crock of shite that we should have thrown to the kurb years ago.

There is quite a lot of TV that I'd be happy to see thrown to the kerb but people have different tastes.

I'm sure that you can find alternative viewing to avoid an event that only takes place once a year.

SpindleInTheWind · 13/05/2022 01:14

I can't believe that people are banging on about this this trivial shite when there are actually important things happening in the world right now like wagatha christie.
