My Dd is 7 weeks tomorrow. She seems to have caught DD1s cold and has had a miserable old day. She seemed to be coping well but has been struggling to sleep because everytime she drifts off she’s coughing or choking on mucus. I have to call the doctors at 8am for an appointment. Is this something I should go to A&E for? She keeps bringing up her milk, it’s choking and spitting bubbling saliva out of her mouth. No fever but she does feel hotter than normal although I could be being paranoid! Her cough is so hacky she sounds like the penguin from toy story 😭

My first DD only fell ill for the first time when she was around 6 months or so so this is uncharted territory for me! I am a little over anxious so fully prepared to being told to get a grip!

How is her breathing? Are her sides sucking in? I'd want my baby checking at 7 weeks to be honest, in case of croup. 💐

I wouldn't take a baby to a and e unless you were desperate. She could pick up something worse waiting to be seen.

Is there an out of hours service / walk-in centre you could take her to? I'm inclined to think you should trust your instincts and if you're worried get her seen. Especially with her being so young. Either you'll get the help she needs or you'll get reassurance that she's ok.

You could always call 111?

Could you call NHS24 and see what they suggest? I’m typically very relaxed about childhood viruses, and goodness knows DC3 was exposed to eeeeeeeverything from birth, but at the same time 7 weeks is pretty little. I doubt any A&E doctor would resent you for being cautious at that age. My concern with going, as with PP, is more about how long you’d need to wait and what else baby could be exposed to.

Is baby still sleeping in your room? I definitely think it’s important to stick extra close for a few days.

Could keeping her upright in a carrier help her get some rest?

she needs to be seen, but try non emergency routes first

I actually jumped in the car and drove to a&e after @DashboardConfessional ’s response. She was doing that side sucking in breathing. We’ve already been put into a side room and just waiting for the doctor. Gosh I’m shaking!! Always trust your instincts!! Thank you everyone for your responses ❤️

How scary for you OP. I have had to take my son the put of hours for retracting his chest but he was much older.
Your comment about the penguin did make me think there must be a wheeze there.
Hope all goes well there's a lot they can do to help in hospital so you're in the best place.
He might be prone to breathing issues with subsequent colds unfortunately so be on the look out for that. My son has had issues due to a cold at 11 weeks.

I'm glad you went. My DS has breathing issues when ill (viral wheeze, now managed with inhaler) and they always told me to look out for that as a sign to be seen urgently. Hope she recovers quickly.
