I’m an adult but hate wasting anyones time so I’m asking mumsnet for their opinions. AIBU for considering a and e?

I’ve had an ear infection for eight weeks: my ear is incredibly swollen, leaking pus and blood daily and smells like fish. (sorry TMI).

In the past 6 weeks I’ve has 5 doses of antibiotics, and steroid drops and it’s remained the same. My ear is still as it was eight weeks ago.

My GP has done an urgent referral to ENT but this is nine weeks away even as urgent referral.
I went to my GP a few days ago and was given another set of antibiotics and sent on my way.

But the issue is I’m getting even more poorly over the past day, my glands in my mouth have now swollen, saliva glands and it’s hard to swallow, my ear is still swollen and red and bleeding, and I’m shivering and clammy, waking up with wet hair and a wet back with sweat. I’ve also slept 15 hours but I can barely keep my eyes open at work. I don’t have a temp however.

im just a loss of what to do, I’m feeling so unwell within myself I can hardly function and do my normal activities but I cannot bear a 6th sent of antibiotics, and without a temp, I doubt they’ll do anything:

Does anyone have any advice? Even ibuprofen isn’t touching the sides.’

Go to a doctor do not ask here

sunshine298 · 12/05/2022 16:20

If you go to a&e they might be able to get you looked at by ENT today - my LB had an awful ear infection and we got seen by ENT that day and had his ear cleaned out

Jojobees · 12/05/2022 16:21

A and E ASAP, please don’t drive yourself.
You have a serious infection. I wish you better soon

Mariposista · 12/05/2022 16:30

Gosh you poor thing. Please go to A and E. After 5 sets of ABO and no joy, you are certainly not wasting anyone's time, you sounds really poorly. Ear infections are so nasty.

MatildaTheCat · 12/05/2022 16:52

I know someone who developed encephalitis from an ear infection and spent three months in ICU. Rare but not impossible.

Dont waste any more time. Go. Use the word Sepsis.

Zemw · 12/05/2022 16:57

Absolutely go.

doodlejump1980 · 12/05/2022 16:58

Go. Now.
could be sepsis. Hope you feel better soon!

Passportloser · 12/05/2022 17:09

Get yourself to a&e lovely! Your poor thing.

LidlMissSunshine · 12/05/2022 17:13

Yes go to A&E. Not only because of the very real concerns about sepsis but also because you’re now having difficulty swallowing and if the swelling gets any worse it could obstruct your airway. Hopefully you’re on your way there now.

Herejustforthisone · 12/05/2022 17:16

This is appropriate for A&E. The infection is worsening.

ZealAndArdour · 12/05/2022 17:18

Most ENT’s run a same day emergency clinic that your Gp can refer into in situations like this, you probably need aural toilet.

Dunno why he’s sent an urgent/2ww appt electronically, he needed to be picking up the phone for a same day review in ENT clinic or arranging for them to see you in the emergency dept.

DrAddisonForbesMontgomery · 12/05/2022 17:25

Oh op I think you need to go to A & E now too. My mum had sepsis and its scary how very quickly it can turn really serious. It may not be but worth being checked over.

NotAGirl · 12/05/2022 17:25

Lamplightlady4 · 12/05/2022 16:13

Thank you! Would I have sepsis without a temp?

Hope you are now at hospital

A low temperature or a high temperature are both possible symptoms

Feeling really sleepy for no apparent reason is definitely a symptom

howler21 · 12/05/2022 17:27

I hope you’ve gone to A&E. I had sepsis develop after coming home from hospital with my newborn. I had normal temperature. Started to feel a bit sweaty and tired, 2 hours later I was unconscious on the floor next to the moses basket. Got treatment in time by the skin of my teeth apparently.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 12/05/2022 17:28

Yes, A&E. No raised temp or a lower than normal temp is a sepsis symptom.

As is low pulse rate.

When you get there use the word sepsis. To everyone you talk to.

BellePeppa · 12/05/2022 17:36

Why on earth hasn’t the GP thought of sepsis and told you to go to A&E? Good luck OP I’m sure they’ll take good care of you once they see you.

alexdgr8 · 12/05/2022 17:36

hope you have now got yourself taken to hosp.
let us know how you got on, when you are able to.
all the very best.

ThelmaDinkley · 12/05/2022 17:47

Hope you get sorted and feel better soon OP

CloudSharkie · 12/05/2022 17:57

I’m feeling so unwell within myself I can hardly function and do my normal activities

These are both signs you should call 999 for an ambulance; though if you have someone to take you to A and E get them to do that.

I hope you get better soon.

Daniel2008 · 13/05/2022 22:11

@Lamplightlady4 how did you get on? .x.x.

BlueOverYellow · 13/05/2022 22:25

Your GP is incompetent ... you should have been sent to A&E! Go!

Seiheiki · 13/05/2022 22:39

How are you now OP?

hmc39 · 13/05/2022 22:46

I hope you're doing OK!

Twinmum12 · 13/05/2022 22:51

Hope you got to a&e!

Duchess379 · 13/05/2022 22:56
