Locked out

Really sorry, posting for traffic. My elderly mum has locked herself out of her house. She only moved In yesterday. I'm on my way (luckily I took a key). The key is still in the other side of the door. It's a upvc type door, and I think I won't be able to unlock it with the key still in the other side. Anyone have any ideas? Is there anything I can do, or shall I just call a locksmith?
Thank you!

Of the key is in other side of door, surely it can't be locked?

Unless someone is inside?

Thingsthatgo · 12/05/2022 14:12

It just locked when she closed it, she may have pulled the handle up.

You might get lucky if the key is in straight.

Standard UPVC doors don't lock themselves (especially with the key still in the otherside), even if you do pull the handle up. Is she sure it isn't just stiff/dodgy?

Most modern UPVC doors need to be physically locked don't they? When we pull handle up on ours it does need a bit more welly to open it, so it might just need a bit of a shove?

Mine does. As does my parents. They had to get a locksmith out.

Our old house had a UPVC door that locked with just pulling the handle up. The previous owner was an old couple, and they had it installed, so they could quickly and easily lock it etc, so it's possible.

When you get there try all the usual handle pulling tricks.
Pull it up again and see if it opens
Pull it up and hold it up, see if the key moves
Hold it down and wriggle it, just a little bit...
Swear at it

But yes, a locksmith will sort it out!

Wow I never knew that they could lock themselves! I will be a bit more careful with mine in future 😁
