To be gutted I need to have a molar taken out due to wisdom tooth

I've never had any issues with my teeth up until now. I have a wisdom tooth (bottom left hand side) that is growing at an angle towards my molar, it's been like that for probably 7 or 8 years and hasn't caused me any pain and my dentist never mentioned it so I thought all was fine.

I went to a new dentist and had xrays done and it turns out that it has damaged my molar, causing decay. I'll either need the wisdom tooth or damaged tooth taken out.

I'm so nervous and upset.

I just had my lower left wisdom tooth removed this morning. I was referred to the dental hospital for the extraction due to the shape of the tooth's root. The whole thing was over in less than 10 minutes and was completely painless.

Wisdom teeth are surplus to requirements so I would opt to have that one removed if you get the choice. Don't worry about the extraction itself. The idea of it is 100% worse than the actual process. Just stock up on ibuprofen for after 👍🏼

I'm waiting for this exact thing, but bottom right. Apparently it could poke through to the nerve of the tooth in front any time. Damn wisdom teeth! Don't worry though, we'll both be fine.

I had pretty much the exact same issue. Very clearly needed my wisdom tooth taken out as there was quite literally no space for it. Dentist refused to do it on the NHS and I couldn’t afford private so had no choice but to let it grow. Cracked the tooth next to it which I then needed taken out alongside the wisdom tooth.

Personally OP if I had the choice between having the molar removed or the wisdom tooth, I’d choose the wisdom tooth as you may well end up needing it out anyway

I lost one about 12 years ago. Its never bothered me tbh. I have a big hole in another now and can't even see a dentist. I would happily have it taken out now

You won’t miss it, honestly.

I had a wisdom tooth reminded, was so quick and painless that the tooth was it Andi thought they hadn't even started! Guess it's a different experience for everyone. What I didn't like was the clove oil on cotton wool stuffed in the hole left. Never have been much of a clove fan, but that really put me off, you had to wait for the cotton wool to fall out I wasn't allowed to take it out. I did lots of mouth washes to try and encourage it out,!

Thank you all!

I'm not really sure how damaged the molar is, but I don't know a lot about dental treatments to know how salvageable it is but I think if I had the choice I'd rather remove the damaged molar and keep the healthy wisdom tooth, my dentist mentioned it may potentially move and close the gap left by the removed molar?

It's so confusing to me because my teeth look healthy and aren't in any pain, the issue is only shown by an xray, thank goodness I had an xray (my first one ever)!

My husband is in this situation at the moment, where it looks like his molar might need to be removed due to damage rather than the wisdom tooth. He went to the hospital to have he tooth extracted, but has been referred for more scans instead, just so there's a very clear picture of what's happening before anything is done. Have you been referred to the hospital for this?

TerryJ94 · 12/05/2022 21:07

I had similar, 4 wisdom teeth came through, cracking at least one tooth on each side in the process leading to decay and cavities. Have had to have all 4 wisdom teeth and 3 of the 4 damaged teeth out. Thankfully they’re all towards the back but it’s not nice at all.

I paid to have it done privately so I could be sedated as I was so nervous

@toastofthetown No I haven't been referred to the hospital, my dentist has asked for a second opinion from a more senior dentist so I have an appointment with them first to see what they say.
