Artificial garden lawns - what a weird world

Another installed on our street. I just don’t understand it. Why would anyone do this?

There is a petition to ban their sale for installation in residential dwellings if you want to sign it:

It’s only got 5,900 signatures so far, which seems a pretty low number, given how much of a no brainer this is, imo. Maybe that’s just me.

petition deleted by MNHQ as we don't allow them, we're afraid.

Thanks for the petition link to the person who kindly sent!

Like you say many of these moaning will be using and disposing of more plastic than they realise

Nope! I don't know how you'd come to that conclusion. I'd guess the artificial lawn people also guilty of that. Judgemental perhaps...

I can't imagine caring this much what LAWN other people have. It's you people who are the worst neighbors I would 'lose respect' for for being so whiny and judgemental about things that don't affect you.

Meanwhile I'll be over here with my very nice artificial lawn, without an abundance of insects or weeds to annoy me, not storing a large lawnmower or wasting my money on a gardener or supplies, always being company ready, and loving life.

More artificial lawns please.

You want to be careful your perfect lawn doesn't end up on here. 🤣

@sweetieqie so do your children have no plastic toys
Its not all or nothing is it
I have a small strip of astro but i also have plants and a pond and don't buy lots of other plastic tat that many on here moaning about astro do and many will have more than 2 children , so its all relative

I genuinely don't buy new plastic toys. Either gifts that I dont ask for, party bags or secondhand (I sound like Scrooge now).

Anyway, for me, a tiny strip isn't the problem. It's the ripping out an actual grass for a pretend patch of grass, and sanitising nature, seeing it as an inconvenience. It's pretty depressing. It hasn't caught on yet, but I constantly see it on my Instagram feed, all the property renovation videos are just creating Love Island setsConfused

I8toys · 11/05/2022 19:59

Its vile. The fact that it comes on rolls like carpet and that people hoover it. Wall-E is not going to be fiction its going to become fact.

Yes true.
I also remember a film I used to watch when my teens were little. Over the hedge, about a group of animals who were displaced when a housing development was built and all the people had their perfect gardens without a thought for the creatures who lived there first. Can't believe some people just don't care 😢

EinsteinaGogo · 11/05/2022 20:59

We have artificial grass in part of our garden,

It's been in for about 7 years.
It was expensive and has shock pad layers underneath it so the kids could play football and do gymnastics all year round.

We also have other natural parts of the garden, and a greenhouse for veg.

Doesn't have to be all or nothing, I don't regret getting it one bit.

Something I hate even more than artificial lawns are people who have a chip on their shoulder about everyone needing to have real grass at any cost. Stop being so bloody sanctimonious. Yes, I too am not a big fan of artificial lawns but gosh the holier than thou posts on here stink even more than those artificial lawns.

Trixiefirecracker · 11/05/2022 21:58

Is it something to do with that awful Mrs. Hinch woman and her immaculate grey sterile home. Do you have to throw zoflora on it regularly to get it to stop stinking of cat piss?

But that’s the mumsnet way! I think some people are just dramatic and some find certain topics particularly infuriating so end up having a big old rant. Anonymity is the cause I assume.

I have quite a few friends with fake grass (young families with a bit too much disposable income) and I’ve always been a bit incensed by them so the theatrics on this thread have been personally delightful to read.

chaosmaker · 11/05/2022 22:49

ReeseWitherfork · 11/05/2022 11:58

Plenty of creepy crawlies live under patio slabs.

“Unless you are childless than a plastic garden is moot.” Pfffft. Not having children is such a red herring when discussing environmental issues. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see what would happen if everyone stopped reproducing.

Also doesn’t take much brain power to work out that single plastic gardens aren’t an issue to the extent that millions would be. Their rise in popularity is the issue at hand.

And they look shit.

If everyone stopped reproducing the planet would rejoice and regenerate :D

KosherDill · 12/05/2022 05:57

Imagine how beautiful the planet would be without humans...

MinnieMountain · 12/05/2022 06:10

We have artificial grass. The area was gravel when we bought our house and it was winter so hard for turf to grow. We have to cross it to get our bikes out, and have a small child so it makes sense.
The rest of our garden, including our gravelled parking space, it full of plants and grasses.

Figmentofmyimagination · 12/05/2022 08:24

Definitely not ‘desirable’.

twiz but it's our planet and ecosystem. So not your choice and it's everyone's problem.

Hopefully it'll be cracked down on soon. If petrol cars will be phased out in 20 years.then so should green plastic gardens.

DressingPafe · 12/05/2022 08:47

It won't be long before they're a fashion statement and come in different colours

Its been available in different colours for ages. I have a small patch of blue fake grass in my garden. I love it, adds a tropical vibe. But that probably makes me even worse in MN eyes!

My London terrace small garden was all brambles when I moved in. I hired a professional gardener to cut it all down and sort it out. It’s not so much that grass won’t grow, but it would be taken over by weeds and brambles. It was the gardener himself that recommended fake grass over a weed membrane, to make the garden usable.

I have a huge tree in my tiny garden, that I love and would never cut down (as so many neighbours have done). I have flower beds and all sorts of plants growing. So yeah I have a tiny patch of (blue) fake grass. I don’t care what other people think. My garden is my happy place.

Labscollie · 12/05/2022 08:51

Good, old cancel culture, don't you just love it. What effect does the lawn have on you, apart from being a snob? Their house, their choice.

Labscollie · 12/05/2022 08:53

TabbyM · 11/05/2022 12:36

I planted the garden for biodiversity so I would never have a plastic lawn as they are worse than paving or concrete environmentally when you factor in the microplastic pollution. I can see some limited indoors or for disable people but not happy with draining into the water courses.

And yes, I also appreciate dandelions and daisies in my grass...

Biodiversity? I've heard it all now 😅🤣

RTFT. Plenty of posters explaining how it effects them.

Proof ignorance is bliss.

Isn't it just! It's going to be an uphill struggle effecting any positive change where the climate crisis is concerned, as these people don't consider themselves part of the problem.

They don't look nice (the motivating factor in most of these posts) no matter how much was paid. The environmental impact should be off putting to any responsible person.

I've signed the petition anyway. Would be nice to get them banned.
