Birthday gift

It's my birthday. My SIL (DH sister) has given me a cheap, poor quality facial hair epilator and some cheap bronzer I would never use.
I'm not very hairy but have had to tweeze some recently :/..I'm feeling quite hurt and offended by this gift. I would rather she just gave me a card or nothing at all..

AIBU?

How ungrateful are you? Your SIL gave you a gift and you chose to come on here and moan about it, get a grip, learn some manners and be grateful that she even remembered your birthday. If you don't like the gifts, you could politely tell her next time you have an event not to waste her money buying for you, and then give them to a charity shop.

Oh come on . It's clear those haven't been thoughtful gifts . Probably just regifted or magazine freebies.
I'm with OP if you can't give a thoughtful gift better to give nothing .

Bryonny84 · 10/05/2022 20:15

We all get gifts we don't really want. Personally I'd say thanks very much and never use or I'd say thanks very much but no need to buy gifts in future.

Same, a lovely card and some chocs would be better than clutter that I don't want, need or would use.

smine1 · 10/05/2022 20:16

Maybe she's struggling financially, maybe she thought 'that'll do' maybe if she had just got you a card that wouldn't have gone down too well either and no card at all would really have upset you , be pleased you got something.

A facial hair epilator is a bit of a strange and specific gift. Especially if you haven’t mentioned one to her or facial hair in general before.

I wouldn’t feel hurt though. It’s only a gift, not the end of the world, you don’t have to use them.

Crankley · 10/05/2022 20:19

Thank her profusely and give them to her for her Christmas present.

Blossomandbee · 10/05/2022 20:19

Cheap bronzer wouldn't bother me, as others have said the value shouldn't matter. But I think a gift that implies the receiver has facial hair is a bit insulting personally.

carefullycourageous · 10/05/2022 20:21

They are shit gifts but you just have to shrug it off, buy yourself a big box of chocolates.

RunnerDuck2020 · 10/05/2022 20:27

I’d be quite offended by the facial hair epilator personally.

PinkSyCo · 10/05/2022 20:40

I think they’re good practical gifts. Better than being bunged a boring old box of chocolates or bunch of flowers anyway.

Excellent plan

Are you the SIL lol?

This sums up how I feel

I would usually agree.. but come on..hair removal tools are an insult.

rainyskylight · 10/05/2022 20:59

Can't work out whether @Speakuptomakeyourselfheard is winding us up or not. Clearly it's offensive to give someone a gift that says "do something about your moustache".

StoneofDestiny · 10/05/2022 21:05

Hard to believe anybody thought those were appropriate gifts.
buy them the same for theirs as they obviously like them!

Fuck sake 😂 please tell me you're on the wind up 🤞🏽😅

This! You can't get more obviously insulting 🫣

"Happy birthday, now sort your 'tache out"

Sweetener12 · 11/05/2022 09:04

I don't think you're BU, facial hair epilator is a very specific gift and even if she never implied you have some hair to remove it would look like she did anyway. As for the bronzer, I would have thought nothing of it, but it also depends on how well does she know you, what her idea of beauty is (still doesn't mean she had to push it onto you though). Maybe tell her no gifts needed next time, a simple smartshow 3 video card would do etc etc.
