To think that my sister has to pay me

Hello everyone,
So I had a certain medical device and I landed it to my sister when she got sick (it helps with flu, covid, etc.). My husband absolutely wanted to have one at home in case we get sick too and we don't live too close to my sister, so it's not easy to share. So my sister told me that she wil buy this medical device from me, since she was using it already, and I can buy myself another one. So that's what I did (and the device is not particularly cheap).

Because of supply issues, the device that I purchased was not available for a 3 months, so even when my son got sick, it was my sister who had the first one at her house.

Finally, she took the decision to move out of the country and decided that the device didn't help her latest sickness or whatever it is that she had, so she gave it back to me and she doesn't think that she has to pay me because I have it now. So I ended up paying for 2 devices and I only need one.

AIBU to be upset and think that she lied to me?

You are in the right as your sister agreed to buy it from you. Have you used the second one/has it turned up yet? If not, could you return it/cancel the order?

If both devices have been used then I would tell my sister that if she returns the device to you then you will sell it second hand and she will need to cover the remainder.

You should have waited for your sister to pay you before buying a second device if money is tight really.

I think you've missed the boat because you accepted it back. That's on you. That was the time to have the discussion.

Can you sell the new one?

I can understand why you're upset if your sister knew you were replacing/had replaced it, and still insisted on giving you back the one you didn't want, but if you accepted it... well, you need to accept that you've accepted it.

Technically, she should have paid you, but I suspect you are unlikely to get any money from her.

Could you sell one of the devices to get some money back?

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 10/05/2022 19:01

Technically she should have paid you but you should have spoken to her before accepting it back.

Your sister is moving overseas and this is your primary concern? Confused
Just sell it on to someone else.

Maybe it was very expensive?

I never said my sister was going overseas, he's going to a neighbooring country and she's a person who never stays long in one place, so I'm used to it.

They can be used together to make sure they are both working

They sometimes mess up, its good to have two

I have no idea what anyone is talking about!

DoorWasAJar · 11/05/2022 02:28

What is this item? I would like one too but this is so mysterious... is it a nebuliser?

Rodion · 11/05/2022 02:51

I think it depends what we're talking about - £30 for a pulse oximeter vs £££ for a cpap machine? Obviously the first can still be a lot of money when finances are tight, but you would still be able to sell on the new one, or get a return. A family member risking you being down several hundred pounds feels actively uncaring rather than just not thinking (which I think is probably the category a £30 item falls into).

I’m just intrigued about the ‘device’ and it’s magical powers.

HoppingPavlova · 11/05/2022 03:38

You shouldn’t have accepted it back and advised that you would have the $$ instead as agreed, and up yo her what she does with it.

Over what sort of time period did this happen?
