Graduation present?

Posting here for traffic.

What graduation present did you get from your parents? Or have you bought for your children? Please share the item and it’s approximate cost in today’s money.

I received nothing, nor did my DH (we were both first in our families to go to uni so I don’t think our parents knew it was a thing). Our DS is graduating soon and we have no idea at all about what people usually get and what they spend.

Given many parents already spend a fortune on the children's university education, seems odd that anyone thinks they should give a gift too.

We paid off our DS’s overdraft (my now exH had the same done for him by his DM when he graduated). Made it very clear it was a one time thing! Meant he could start with a clean slate as it were.

Posts like this make parents feel pressured to buy a gift.

I refuse to feel pressured.

Most people are saying they didn’t buy gifts, so not very much pressure!

I didn’t get anything, nor have I given anything (2 down, one coming up). I didn’t even pay for an outfit or gown hire, and dh takes nicer photos than the official ones! We had a family meal out and I paid for accommodation each time that both girls then used after we’d left. Ds won’t need that as he will be living in his uni city.

Didn’t give any money or gifts for GCSEs or A levels either.

I didn’t get anything from my parents when I graduated in the 1980s, but then they had topped up my grant during my studies so that was more than enough. I think my elder sister (first uni grad in the family) gave me a briefcase when I got my Masters.

We took DS out for a fabulous dinner on his graduation (in lieu of a grad ceremony, thanks Covid), and DH took him out to choose a watch - not Rolex territory though.

Maybe not on this particular thread @atiaofthejulii, but they have on similar threads and on the WIWIKAU Facebook page.

I’ve never heard of a graduation present. I certainly didn’t get one from my parents back in the day, and we didn’t get one for DD when she graduated either. We went for a pizza afterwards. Frankly, the extortionate costs of the train tickets to attend the ceremony wiped us out for a while! DD paid for the tickets for the ceremony and hired the gown herself.
