To want to know your experiences of amitriptyline?

Amitriptyline · 09/05/2022 18:18

A bit nosy I know, I've been prescribed these tablets and pick them up tomorrow so looking for some first hand experiences from anyone who has had them.

10mg at night I believe the dosage is.

I'm a little bit apprehensive about starting them as I'm quite sensitive to meds and I can't really afford to put on any more weight which I know can be a side effect. Eeek.

They are for TMD pain but I'm hoping to get some benefit from them for my depression as I know its a multi use drug.

Thanks!

Ooh and just remembered they did give me a dry mouth and weird taste in mouth after a while. Not sure what that was about!

SwimmingIsCool · 09/05/2022 23:24

And a quick tip - I used to take about 4 or 5pm. Any later than that and I couldn't get up at all in the morning!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/05/2022 23:28

Best thing ever. I take them for an itchy skin condition that stops me sleeping otherwise. Always wake up itching if I do not take them, sleep through reliably when I do.

Interesting about the weight gain. I have been taking them since just before the pandemic so hard to know which is the cause of my weight gain!

Popsicle33 · 10/05/2022 01:33

Oh I forgot about the horrific dry mouth!

BreadAndWater · 10/05/2022 01:35

Try take them 12 hours before you are due to wake up

I started on 10mg and was very tired the first few days and then it evens out, every time iv gone up iv been the same

Im now on 50mg and it doesnt help with sleep as much as it used to but it still can make me groggy if i dont take it 12 hours before due to wake up

BreadAndWater · 10/05/2022 01:44

I take 50mg and my gp and consultant both separately said that 50mg was the highest they were both willing to go and would have to add in another pain killer on top 🤷🏻‍♀️

ICrunchCrispsNotNumbers · 10/05/2022 02:18

@Amitriptyline i’ve been on it since last Christmas as I suffer from Cronic pain. It’s brilliant at allowing you to sleep. I think it does a great job of making things manageable of an evening. Good luck 👍🏻 They do take time to get used to. If you find that the 10mg is too low,
your doctor may be able to up it to 29mg. 🙂

ICrunchCrispsNotNumbers · 10/05/2022 02:19

i’m on the 10mg too, btw.

Gonetogetacoffee · 20/05/2022 16:44

@amitryptaline just wondering how you're getting on with these? Are they working?

Christmastreejoy · 20/05/2022 17:16

I put on sooooo much weight with this and haven’t managed to loose it despite switching to gabapentin (mine is for chronic pain).

Lisa7935 · 21/05/2023 06:50

This drug has been so helpful, I suffered for panic attack, social phobia and anxiety for over 15 years, I started amitriptyline 7 weeks ago and my life has since changed, I can express myself in public, no more panic attack nor anxiety. No side effects. I am so thankful - https://healthful-online.com/c2831/amitriptyline.html

Ive just taken my first 10 mg dose of Amytryptaline for fibromyalgia and I take sertraline for depression and usually Zapain for my pain.Any advice ,I don’t know what to expect

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 03/09/2025 21:10

I felt like a zombie. Worst drug I've ever been on. I couldn't stay awake it was awful.

FairyPoppins · 03/09/2025 21:19

I appreciate this thread is a couple of years old, but might be useful still to others starting on Amytriptaline....
I take 75mg at night. Worked up to 50mg for preventative migraine, then upped to 75mg after tearing my rotator cuff.
I've not had an unbroken night's sleep for about 10yrs, and whilst I don't have a problem dropping off I'm usually awake around 4am and struggling to get back to sleep.
I do suffer with a dry mouth with these too - usually have a little tin of mints handy which helps

ShowMeTheSushi · 03/09/2025 21:22

I had them for chronic neck pain and migraines but they just made me sleepy and dizzy. Hope they work better for you OP.

MyElatedUmberFinch · 03/09/2025 21:22

Really good for nerve pain in my foot and a good side effect was I slept well. I’m off them now though.

Natsammy · 03/09/2025 21:30

What mg were you on?

Ive just taken my first 10 mg dose of Amytryptaline for fibromyalgia and I take sertraline for depression and usually Zapain for my pain.Any advice ,I don’t know what to expect

I’ve had fibromyalgia for years now and, though I loathe the stuff, I rely on Pregabalin (Lyrica) and codeine for pain and sleep, and general je ne sais quoi.

But at some point a few years ago I asked my GP to give me low dose Amitryptaline too for night time, having read that it boosts the analgesic effect of Lyrica re fibro. It was fine for a while, I certainly slept , but then even at only 10mg, it started exacerbating the restless legs syndrome the Lyrica is so good at squashing.
( It’s RLS which prevents my taking any other type of anti depressant too, as the damn things set it going like crazy)
Reluctantly I gave it up and we increased my Lyrica instead.
(At my advanced age it’s probably bad enough to be taking two hefty drugs long term, and adding a third probably was a reckless idea )

So the point of this waffle is, be cautious with Amitryptaline if you endure RLS, as it may well fan the flames. I hope it works well for you though

(oh yeah also….hadnt heard of Zapain at all, and I thought I knew all the painkillers! )

girafferaffle · 04/09/2025 11:03

You'll be a bit groggy for a few days and you need to give it a few weeks to work.

Some people don't get on with it but I love it.

Bris1234 · 04/09/2025 11:08

Was on the same dose as you for several years to help with an anxiety disorder. Helped me sleep, helped manage my anxiety. A little groggy in the mornings maybe. Shocking hangover if you have a couple of drinks. Worth staying off the booze or maybe just having one small one. I would 100% recommend though, the risks and side effects totally outweighed by the massive benefits of being able to function and manage my anxiety properly. They didn't let me 'spiral' when I was panicking. Combined with CBT, I was able to come off them (gradually) after two years.
