I've always given my career everything and done fairly well. But now l've moved into a different area with a new company and its just shit.

The company's great, my colleagues are good. But it's just shit not being great at your job.

I need to stick it out for at least another 6 months.

Yes, me, except not the first part where I was great at first. I suppose I've come to terms with it over time. I've tried to get help to be better but I just get told "you have imposter syndrome, everyone feels that way". No, I'm not being down on myself, I just genuinely, proveably, am crap.

toastfiend · 09/05/2022 13:33

What makes you think you're not good at your job?

In my experience, the people with imposter syndrome who think they're shit at their jobs are generally good, or have all the materials to be good but need more time and experience in that specific area, because they actually care. The people who think they're fantastic are often fairly average to outright shit but don't see any need to improve because they think they're fantastic and are, therefore, difficult to work with.

Is there anything specific that makes you feel this way? Feedback you've received etc? I have anxiety and I can convince myself I'm shit very easily, but feedback and performance reviews don't tally with my anxiety brain's beliefs.

Not being a superstar is very different to being actually crap (and I'm sure you're not, or won't be once you learn the ropes).

I think the not-superstars who are nevertheless diligent and reliable should be more valued than they are.

itsmeagainlol · 09/05/2022 13:38

I'm sure it's just because to all unfamiliar and will improve in time.

Aniita · 09/05/2022 13:40

Buy you can't expect to be good straight away when you move to a new job / company? It takes time to get to know new processes, wow and colleagues

RingRingRed · 09/05/2022 13:40

No one would say I was crap, the company isn't like that at all. But I can see when I've done something wrong or to a certain low level.

I shouldn't have been hired for the role. They needed someone with more specialised experience.

I can't see around the corner of what's coming. I'm reactive not proactive.

I want to be ok with it and just think oh well I'm doing my best. Because I am.

Me. I am wank at most aspects of working life. Getting a bit sick of all the "rockstar" bollocks about work.

PleasantBirthday · 09/05/2022 13:45

Me. My job is fine and I do it well enough, but and I could be a rockstar or whatever if I wanted to, but I just don't see any reason. My job is fine but it's not particularly well regarded or well rewarded no matter where you do it.

So it's fine, I do it fine and I don't stress about it much.

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 09/05/2022 13:51

do you just need time to get that experience? or what can you do to get out in front of things? would a workplace mentor help or more regular 1 to 1s with line manager or could your company provide specialist support?

Work2live · 09/05/2022 13:58

I can't see around the corner of what's coming. I'm reactive not proactive.

I feel like this a lot of the time too.

I don’t think I’m bad at my job, but I’m definitely not a superstar. I’m not particularly proactive, I think it’s because I don’t have loads of experience yet. The more you see and do, the easier it becomes to predict things and proactively put things in place.

I wouldn’t stress too much over it. If you’re doing your best that’s all anyone can ask of you, especially in a brand new role!

WalkingOnSonshine · 09/05/2022 14:01

I was fantastic at my old job, because I worked stupid hours. When I left, they replaced me with 2.5 people.

I’m not as good at my new job by my old standards, but I have DC now, so my priorities are different. I do a good enough job to get what I need to do done, but don’t have a burning need to excel like I have previously. My needs are being met in different areas of my life and I’m happy with that.

Sparklybanana · 09/05/2022 14:01

Me. I was hired because of something on my cv which I put because it was the main thing I did, but it was also why I left because I hated it. I interviewed for this job and everything indicated that it would be doing something else but now I'm here, I'm doing what I hated, plus its harder so I feel completely useless as well as doing something I hate. The company is great but I hope to be doing something else soon as it sucks.

KangarooKenny · 09/05/2022 14:05

I used to be great at my job and loved it, then we got a new manager and it all went tits up. This caused me stress and was affecting my sleep. I dropped a day and now I do what I’m paid for, and I arrive and leave in time. My sleep has drastically improved.

KatherineJaneway · 09/05/2022 15:26

I kind of know what you mean. I am working in a new team but in the same role as my old team but the specialism is different. I know little of the specialism and it is hard to learn. I am used to feeling on top of things, I feel at the bottom of a very big mountain at the moment.
