To be bored by how routine life is

Does anyone else get very easily bored?

I am very bored by routine. I have a reasonably challenging job, about 50% of the work is interesting, but the other time is admin/record keeping. The work itself is ok but I get bored of the 9-5 routine.

I love time with my children but it's so brief much of the week, rushing around, dinner, homework etc.

I have free time when my children are with their dad but I don't have a lot of spare cash.

Does anyone have suggestions to keep the boredom at bay?

I was thinking I could find a part time course, find new things to do.... But what? I'm not sporty and would need to be cheap.

I dream of traveling and maybe moving somewhere where I get to experience a different culture in the future, but I want to enjoy time now.

Can you try and create the elements of travel and broadening your horizons that most appeal and try to create them in a smaller more localised way? The cities of the UK are diverse and full of all sorts of activities drawn from many cultures, so if you're not too far from one of them, it's a start.

There is a model which is used in well-being which suggests five things for good mental health - some of these include learning new things and volunteering.

I found an evening course once a week was enough to shake things up for me, but you might also enjoy something like a community garden or allotment?

what about a language and culture course in the evenings?

PolynesianParadise · 09/05/2022 13:14

Time for a new job, something that extends you into new skills and experiences?

Workinghardeveryday · 09/05/2022 13:19

Sorry no help but I feel the same. Only I am not bored at work just totally and utterly pissed off with spending anytime off cleaning after everyone like a slave.

I need a hobby to.

have you thought about getting a dog ? Lovely walks out and it’s free

Sososobored · 09/05/2022 13:54

Language course might be a good idea. Changing my job feels like an obvious improvement and I have been looking but very limited options with as good conditions/flexibility. I will keep looking but I did conclude after searching that maybe I need to find interest outside of work.
I have done voluntary work in the past but the only roles I could find recently felt a bit too much like work. I might try again.
Finding culture at home is a good idea too. I am in day trip distance of London. I might make a list of things to do.
@Workinghardeveryday sorry you feel the same. DC would love a dog but I feel like it wouldn't be fair as we are out of the house so long.

I hear you OP.
I am bored of work, it's uninteresting/motivating but the pay and perks are great, so I cannot leave. I actually despise sitting at my desk all day every day. The desk feels like a ball and chain, so to speak.
I am bored going out with friends as it's the same old thing every time, as much as I love my friends. Doing something further afield means spending more money .. and I am sick of spending money all the time.
I have lost my mojo for the gym and other exercise.
I love going on holiday/travelling and I spend my life wishing the time away between one holiday and the next.
I only work for holiday money and to maintain my house
I am bored of my kids not wanting to do anything ever.
I cannot think of one hobby at all that would possibly make life more interesting for me.
I have longed to live abroad but at the moment its not possible due to the children and where they are in school/other related issues

Nothing interests me apart from going on holiday (abroad, I'm UK based), trying to spend as little as I can to save for holidays (impossible in current UK economy climate) and planning for a holiday.

Sorry, no words of wisdom for you OP, but I get ya

KangarooKenny · 09/05/2022 14:58

Family tree ? But be careful, it’s addictive.

Sososobored · 09/05/2022 15:08

@Worzelandthecrowman you do sound fed up! Nothing quite matches travel does it?! I hope there are some ideas here for you. I'm going to try do something interesting, maybe galleries, theatre or something. If I go by myself I can sit in the cheap seats. I too like catching up with friends but need a bit more.
I actually don't mind my job but the day/week is still routine.

Try geocaching?

Or check out your local library. Obviously for borrowing books but also for info on local clubs and activities.

Try some new recipes with the DCs?

Plant some seeds?

I've just bought some adult Lego. Grin

Argh I typed a long reply and it got lost

careers advice service/openlearn courses might pique your interest and get you into a new interest?

local galleries/art centres/theatres - I’ve recently booked lots of shows and workshops, not so easy if you’re rural though

YouTube - literally anything can be learnt about on YouTube

can you plan a few weekend trips and save up either with kids or while they’re at dad’s - use that child free time and the fact it’s so easy to travel to other countries from the uk to your advantage! Easy to do a weekend to Scandinavia, Belgium, France, Ireland etc.

FelicityFlops · 09/05/2022 15:22

I would really love a week of routine, but no. Every day I get a curved ball thrown at me and today is no exception.
I was on holiday recently and it was just wonderful to wake up at about the same time, know that breakfast was at x, lunch at y and supper at z time. Know that my activities started at a particular time and would finish about 2.5 hours later etc. etc.
I don't mind routine at all, it is so much easier to plan around and makes it simpler to accommodate the odd unexpected event.

Swayingpalmtrees · 09/05/2022 15:25

Quick fixes?

Music
Learning new things
A summer and winter party
Planning a trip and save for something special
Doing things outside your comfort zone
A new look/hair cut
Socialising more often at home or out

Swayingpalmtrees · 09/05/2022 15:26

A degree/ retraining. I am doing that now and it has opened up a whole new world

calmlakes · 09/05/2022 17:06

We moved abroad. We did it once, went back to the UK then did it again I think permanently.

It is really good because even the basic drudge of shopping, filling the car with petrol etc is just different enough to be noticeable.

I guess eventually it becomes totally normal but five years in I still notice the little differences at least some of the time.

Sososobored · 09/05/2022 21:57

Lots of good idea thank you. I don't think I have the energy for serious study on top of work but there are opportunities to study within my current role which I might look into. I'm not sure changing career helps as all jobs involve a daily routine. I will keep an open mind though. Study for fun appeals. And doing more generally.
@calmlakes exciting to make a big move!
