To think the Lake District is the most visited place in Britain?

A little tug of war with Dsis who insists it isn't, her opinion is Cornwall.

I used to live just outside of the Lakes national park and oh boy, it gets busy! I also read somewhere that the local council and environmental bodies are pretty concerned as to how they're going to deal with pollution and such as many more millions are expected to visit each year, especially since it was awarded Heritage status.

Settle it for us, MN!

Surely the most visited place in Britain is London.

It is, but it's closer than you would think London gets about 30 mil people per year and the lakes get around 20mil

Herbarium · 08/05/2022 22:16

London has more transport links, Grin

How does it compare with Cornwall?

I kind of assumed that if you put your boots on and head up in to the hills you will still leave most of the crowdd. Maybe not...

ShaneTwane · 08/05/2022 22:18

What about Snowdonia? Apparently they are having a huge issue with tourists.

TheOriginalEmu · 08/05/2022 22:18

Doesn’t even appear to be in the top 10.

From the top of Loughrigg Fell we could still hear motorbikes zooming through Ambleside. It seems less and less silent each time we go, now. It is hard to resist though.

20 million people a year ! In the beautiful secluded Lake District! That’s an insane number! And I think they all go to the same places along the same roads. It s horrible- not the Lake District, but the overcrowded towns with endless chain shops and awful burger and chip pubs. You can tell I didn’t enjoy the crowds! I’m still shocked by 20 MILLION a visitors. Blimey. That’s a lot of ice cream.

We went to Cornwall last summer and my impression was that Cornwall is still more crowded than Cumbria. Perhaps because many people who go to the Lakes want to walk and there are more people going to Cornwall for the beachy sort of holiday. Both nice. Enjoyed our holiday in Cornwall and like the Lake District.

I live near the Peak District so am biased towards that, but glad if the crowds decide to go elsewhere

Yes it's very ubiquitous now, corporate replaced a lot of what was...authentic. But such is the price of success.

Visitor figures (for 2019) show that by visitor days, Lake District (24m) is second behind South Downs (39m) for national parks. By visitor days per square mile Lake District (26k) is fourth behind Broads, New Forest and South Downs.
For Cornwall the closest comparable figure I can find is bed nights and for Cornwall this is 24m which would give 17k per square mile - which would also place it below the Peak District and North Yorkshire Moors.

Digbyscolleague · 09/05/2022 10:12

I live in the Lake District. Regularly holiday in Cornwall.
Since Covid it has gotten crazy busy here in the Lakes. To the point where if you leave your food shop to a Friday after work you won’t be getting much as shelves are bare!
There doesn’t seem a quiet time here like there used to be either. I would say my town in August is about the same amount of busy as Cornwall in August.

I wouldn’t say it was busier than London though, but there isn’t the infrastructure for the amount of tourists like there are there!

Justkeeppedaling · 09/05/2022 10:17

The problem with Cornwall is that there's pretty much only one way in and out. It's hemmed in on 3 sides by water, so there's not much room for visitors to expand out sideways, if you see what I mean.

torquewench · 09/05/2022 10:18

As a motorcyclist, can I point out that from my own POV its generally more of a trundle through Ambleside than a zoom. And at least you don't have to fight me for a parking space 😉
