To use nappies instead of pull ups at nighttime

Bit of a melt down at bedtime tonight as DD has decided she doesn't want to wear a nappy anymore.

DD is 4 next month and was potty trained a few months back took ages to train her. She is a very deep sleeper and doesn't wake up at all in the night. She still wets the bed at night which isn't a problem right? A lot of children her age aren't dry and we have never made a big deal out of it. She wears a nappy as she is a tummy sleep and we find it can get a better fit as she is fairly petite.

We have tried pull ups in the past but we end up going through a fair few each night as I find they leak a lot. I have gone to put a nappy on her tonight and she's kicked up a big fuss about it and doesn't want to wear it. Which resulted in me having to wait until she fell asleep to put it on her

I don't think it's a problem that she still wears a nappy at night, aibu to keep using nappies?

It's not a problem as such but it could become one if it turns bedtime into a battle ground every night

Sunshinegirl82 · 08/05/2022 20:29

Can you use the nappy pants? Might feel more grown up for her than traditional nappy. We used those (standard ones from Aldi in a size 7) and they were fine.

MadeForThis · 08/05/2022 20:30

Night time dryness is due to a hormone in their body. You can't toilet train at night. You just have to wait for the hormone to kick in and they will be dry.

Anything up to age 7 is average.

I would try a few different brands of pull ups. Tesco size 7 works with my 4yo.

I didn't know Aldi did them in a Size 7!!! We used the size 6+ and just found them a bit too small.

I think you just do what’s right for your child really! They are all so different and you just tailor things to suit each one as needed and do what you can to get sleep! I can understand a four year old not being so keen on nappies, they have a bit more awareness and that but if it works for you there’s nothing at all wrong with it in my opinion.

Sunshinegirl82 · 08/05/2022 20:33

Yes, they do a 7! They do an actual "night pant" as well which is a cheaper version of the dry nites.

The aldi night time pull ups size aged 4 to 7 are way bigger than the huggies equivalent.

Sammilouwho · 08/05/2022 20:33

We had this! We use the Disney themed ones off Amazon in a size 7!
My little one is also 4 :)

Definitely! I don't understand why it's an issue all of a sudden as she's always worn a nappy at night. I would understand if she was back in them after a break. She might have just been over tired tonight. I am going to look into the Aldi versions tho.

If she really doesn't want to then make a deal with her.
say she can sleep without one for two or three nights, if she's dry, fine. If not, she wears one until she wants to try again.
This is what we did for DD. I did have a waterproof mattress cover on the bed and I laid one on the floor, put a towel over it, and put a potty on it, left a night light on. She wet the bed the first night and that was it. Used the potty once or twice in the first week, then ignored it and took herself to the toilet.
At some point you have to let her have a go, and what are you going to do if she takes the nappy off?

SouperNoodle · 08/05/2022 20:36

Both my girls wear pull ups at night and I've found them to be so much better than nappies. We use Huggies.

I think this is a good idea, except her nappy is very wet in the mornings. DH thought she was going whilst awake in the mornings but I normally check her nappy before I go to bed and it's always wet. I think its mainly hormonal but it might be worth a shot.

With pull ups, the child can get themselves ready for bed independently, you can keep them in the drawer with their pj's and there's no big deal about putting them on discreetly. I can totally see why a four year old wouldn't want to have a nappy put on them.

emile27 · 08/05/2022 20:40

We have tried them before but they just didn't fit DD that well, they were fine length wise but just had a gap at the top so she leaked out the top x

OP posts:
LifeIsBusy · 08/05/2022 20:47

So use what works for you...but to save the meltdowns could you try putting a reusable wrap over the pull ups to avoid the leaking issues?

I hear it's all hormonal regarding night wakings. Our 3.5 year old is dry through the night but wakes us all up to take him to the loo... Sometimes several times a night and had like never slept all night 😴. I say hold onto those nappies

Shakeitshakeitbaby · 08/05/2022 20:53

The Aldi nighttime age 4 to 7 nappy pants are great. They hold loads.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I think I will talk to her in the morning when I am changing her. She may have been over tired tonight, I will also get some Aldi ones to trial and see if they are an better.

Aldi size 7 pull ups are great, or Pampers do a size 8 pull up. Ds is 6yo, dry in the day since 2yo, but still not reliably dry at night - 9 nights out of 10 he's dry in the morning, but he still doesn't wake up if he does need to pee. Not much can be done about that really, we're both comfortable with him still wearing pull ups at night.

How? What training is needed?

KangarooKenny · 08/05/2022 21:30

Mine wore a nappy at night until she was about 5. She was late being dry at night.

Googlecanthelpme · 08/05/2022 21:33

There’s no way my almost 4 year old would go in a nappy. He just about tolerates nappy pants as he believes nappies are very babyish.
I actually just use regular pampers, size 5 as that’s what I buy for younger one and they fit fine. A 6 would be fine too, there’s not much difference I don’t think.

pampers do super hero nappy pants which feel a bit more grown up - but the price difference between that and say Aldi is quite a lot. I only use pampers bc my youngest managed to leak out of every other brand we ever bought - I think they have a weird body shape! I’d much prefer to save money and use Aldi!
