Yet another pair of trainers ruined !

nativityplayreject · 08/05/2022 10:30

Having to buy dc yet another pair of trainers because a piece of plastic in back of the heel is now poking through the fabric and causing blisters/pain.

Thye still fit and the rest of the shoe is fine. There doesn't seem to be an easy way of removing this upright plastic support and I don't know how wearable it would be if I did manage to get it out.

Does anyone else have this problem ?

How does your DC put the trainers on? If they are bending the back down because they don't untie them then it will lead to the support at the back bending and poking through. Make sure your DC is untying their laces and tying them each time they put their shoes on.

rainbowunicorn · 08/05/2022 10:35

Sounds like they are forcing the shoe on rather than untying the laces or they are untying but not loosening enough at the tongue so the heel is being broken down.

nativityplayreject · 08/05/2022 10:44

Yes, you are both right, the dc lazy way of not undoing the shoe each time is the root cause and I voiced my opinion that this was the issue yesterday.

I'm still wondering if anyone has successfully removed the offending piece of plastic just to get a little more wear from the trainer as money is tight at the moment.

My son did this to a pair of brand new expensive Nike trainers. He slipped them on to pop outside and stood on the backs folded down. Ruined. Couldnt remove the plastic and had to be binned.

I've seen fixes for this where you cover the plastic over with material. Never tried it myself but worth a go? There must be something on YouTube!

Shoe horns extend the life.

Justhereforthis · 08/05/2022 10:58

You can buy stick in heel protectors from Amazon, or even cut your own from a piece of moleskin. Once a repair is made they’d need to put the shoe on properly to avoid dragging the sticky patch off.
I’ve extended the life of several pairs this way. Moleskin is great as you can use it to repair items or protect skin from rubbing. .

Summerholidayorcovidagain · 08/05/2022 11:03

Surely dc uses their pocket money to replace? They will take more care then imo.

ColettesEarrings · 08/05/2022 11:05

How old are the dc? Because I'd be livid they'd ruined good trainers like that if money was tight. They'd have to make do until the rest of the trainer warranted replacing tbh. The repair ideas upthread are great, but I'd be having a pretty cross conversation with them as well!

MaChienEstUnDick · 08/05/2022 11:08

Those really padded blister plasters are a revelation OP (I have funny feet and shoes always rub). Get the DC to wear them so their feet are protected? They're more expensive than normal Elastoplast but much cheaper than new shoes!

Time2ChangeName · 08/05/2022 11:09

Get them a cheap shitty pair until their feet grow. Saves you some money and they hopefully learn to treat their trainers better next time.

zingally · 08/05/2022 11:09

If it's because he's being a lazy sod and not putting his shoes on properly, then this is the last pair you replace because the back is broken! If the same thing keeps happening, even after you've explained why it's happening... that's on him.

And if he can't tie laces, and that's the reason, time to learn - or he goes back into velcro until he can.

SuspiciousBanana · 08/05/2022 11:11

My DS is a fucking monster when it comes to footwear. Other two were never even nearly this bad! He can trash them in weeks. No idea what the hell he does!!

OMG ! You have to sign up/prove your identity (age) to watch one demonstrating how to remove the plastic support strip. Bloody foot fetishists !

By them some shoe zone trainers as a punishment!

Schmz · 08/05/2022 11:20

anytime I see my dd’s shoes without her feet in them I untie the laces so the lazy girl has to put them on properly !!

Excellent tip - I'll be doing that from now on.

This. Waste of your money & the planet's resources.

Let them make do.

Yarnasaurus · 08/05/2022 11:41

Switch out the laces for elastic laces so they can be slipped on without trashing the heel. You can get elastic laces that look exactly like standard laces if they won't accept the toggle type.

ThatWillBeAllJeeves · 08/05/2022 11:42

Take the laces out everything time rather than just untying them. You have to make it more inconvenient for them to leave them tied.

BaaMoon · 08/05/2022 12:01

Velcro shoes for DC then if he cant be bothered to use laces. Or he buys his own trainers.

Oooh ! That's upping the ante on@Schmz 's tip !

StrawberrySquash · 08/05/2022 12:05

Agree with the undo laces and use a shoehorn. But you do get the odd pair of trainers that just seem to have rubbish lining. I wrecked an expensive pair, but my others I have treated the same have been fine.
Also make sure they are done up tight enough so not constantly moving and wearing away the back.

savoycabbage · 08/05/2022 15:13

I've got an 18 year old who has been this way all her life. She seems to have the mantra of 'why do anything today that you can put off until tomorrow'.

After the billionth time of asking her to not leave her towel on the bathroom floor I started hiding it every time I found it there. In the oven, in the greenhouse. I only had to do it four or five times before she was cured.
