Do you agree with it or not.

Are these people crossing the Channel economic seekers in which case they obviously intend to work illegally.

Lots of people make this claim/assumption based on lots of the asylum seekers being young men but let's just think about it a minute.

You're a family in a country dealing with famine/war/religious persecution. Your sons are at risk of being forced to war or imprisoned, your daughters are at risk of forced marriage/rape, all are at risk of starvation. You manage to scrape together the means to send 1 person to try to get out and make a better life so they can maybe help the rest of the family.

Dependent on country/religion your daughter may have very limited education and have been raised to obey men to her own detriment.

Do you send your daughter or your son?

There is a reason why Sweden are having doubts about their migrant situation, Germany is currently kicking out a lot of their recent migrants and Italy, Greece and even france are looking at solutions, until people can have a grown up discussion without resorting to the emotive angle on the subject the Rwanda deal is needed.

It's only the uneducated type who think it's a simplisitc situation of opening boarders, or we should do 'more'

Bonjovispjs · 07/05/2022 21:27

Yes!

BewareTheLibrarians · 07/05/2022 21:31

@Justanotherlurker It’s not being opposed on solely an emotive angle though, it’s being opposed on an unlawful, unworkable and expensive angle.

Can’t see that anyone on this thread is proposing open borders, or doing “more”. Different strategies like safe routes and resettlement schemes do not mean open borders and increased numbers of asylum seekers. They actually mean more checks and more control on numbers. Which might be an idea to check before you call others uneducated.

Wow, only uneducated people. So those of us who don't think it's humane to ship people to a country renowned for human rights violations and force them to settle there are just a bit thick??

Read up on the experiences of Australia, Israel and Denmark who've tried this plan before and tell me how successful it's likely to be.

We could allow people to apply for Asylum from outside the U.K. we could work with France and other European countries to agree safe migrant routes for asylum seekers to travel and volumes that can be accepted in each country.

We could control immigration by actually having functional processes that allow us to keep track of overstayers and visa infringements and deal with them effectively so that we have more capacity to take in Asylum seekers.

What do you think, OP? Can you summarise your view of 'the Rwanda plan' as you put it, and we can discuss?

MayorDusty · 07/05/2022 21:39

@Lakia11 p
what's your take on it? Or are you just blowing the whistle?

People who accuse others of being uneducated might wish to check how to spell borders.

^this.

In the last week or two there have been over 2000 people crossing the Channel. The plan is to send 300 to Rwanda.
Even if you subscribe to the ridiculous inhumane plan, migrants have a far greater chance of staying in the UK than being sent to Rwanda. Travel with someone who says they're your dependent and you stand a much better chance of staying. Women and children will be bought and sold or kidnapped in the camps.

That's the grown up discussion that is ignored, it's happening in Sweden, Norway, Italy and Germany and there isn't a lot of white middle class women storming the planes on those they do deport for not meeting the criteria.

If the UK was along the lines of the EU on extraditions of asylum seekers there would be outcry from the 'we should do more' crowd.

The ironic situation we are in is that the open boarder crowd are fully mirroring the global capitalist narrative.

The Rwanda plan is inhumane, ugly and lacking in any compassion whatsoever.

A special place in hell for everyone involved in its conception.

This.

it’s disgusting. It won’t happen but the fact they’ve used the idea as red meat for their cruel and unfeeling fans who vote Tory seemingly just to inflict pain on other human beings is vile.

BewareTheLibrarians · 07/05/2022 22:53

@Justanotherlurker EA
Who’s the open border crowd? Who are you talking to? What are you reading that no one else can see?? 😂

Not any chance of having a grown up discussion with people who aren’t following or understanding what’s being discussed on the thread like, for e.g, quite basic concepts like resettlement schemes are not “open borders”, they actually allow a country to control immigration. Whereas in the current situation, boat crossings don’t allow you to control numbers, are unexpected and place a burden unfairly on one small section of the country.

As I think I may have already replied to you on a previous thread about Rwanda. If my explanation is somehow confusing, please feel free to ask for clarity, there’s no shame in that, rather than throw around words like “uneducated” when it’s not clear what relevance your comments have to this thread.

Figrolls14 · 07/05/2022 22:59

The plan is an obscenity
