Should a nine year old have a Tik Tok account

Eightieschildren · 07/05/2022 15:50

My sister has a nine year old girl that she has allowed to have a Tik Tok account. She makes posing videos and my sister then posts these on social media. I’m really concerned that this is inappropriate. My sister did her dissertation on how harmful social media is for children so I can’t believe she’s allowing this. Am I being unreasonable.

So she helps your niece make videos and therefore knows the content and helps her post them?
What is your concern.. the video content?
tik tok?

BaaMoon · 07/05/2022 16:11

Im guessing if she has does her dissertation on it she knows what she is doing

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 07/05/2022 16:17

In my opinion no child under the age of 15 should have any social-media accounts. Hell, if it was up to me none should have unsupervised access to the internet either.

But it seems that your sister is more aware than most about the dangers of social media, so under the circs I’d keep my views to myself

MissMaple82 · 07/05/2022 16:24

Shes an absolute bellend. It's irrelevant that she is monitoring what she uploads, tiktok is rife for absolutely abhorrent shit! He'll would freeze over before I allowed a 9 year old access to that harmful, distressing and mind poisoning crap!

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 07/05/2022 16:25

In my opinion no, but the terms of TikTok say under 18s can have an account if they have parental permission and she does.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/05/2022 16:29

I don't allow dd (10) a tiktok account as whilst you can monitor the output you cannot monitor the other clips she will be shown.

However there are a number of girls in her class (y5) that do have it.

Dd does sometimes watch compilations of tiktoks on YouTube but they are all categorised into "safe" topics, on the communal TV, with child settings. So she will watch "horses being silly" or "cats in the bath" or some such thing.

Hard no

Vallmo47 · 07/05/2022 16:31

YANBU.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 07/05/2022 16:32

None of mine are allowed it. But maybe she doesn't let her have access without mum present? Since she helps her to upload stuff she may be ultra involved?

purpleboy · 07/05/2022 16:35

No way, honestly what is she thinking.

bcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyza · 07/05/2022 16:36

13 for most social media I thought tik too was the same.

PinkSyCo · 07/05/2022 16:36

What do you mean by ‘posing videos?’

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 07/05/2022 16:40

So her mum is in charge of what's posted? Presumably she also filters what her DD can and can't see in terms of comments?

If mum is involved and doing the posting, I can't really see the issue.

Do you know what tok tok is? Have you ever used tik tok??

MissMaple82 · 07/05/2022 16:44

@fairylights

Purringcat3 · 07/05/2022 16:47

Fuck no. I watch tik tok with my 10yr old on my account and I’m able to swipe through anything that’s not ok. I was naive enough last year to let her have an account but it was swiftly removed when I realised there’s no control on what can appear . It’s horrendous

Michellebops · 07/05/2022 16:47

I post videos on my tik tok but they are locked and only I can see them.

Is it possible she has the same privacy settings?

You can control who sees them

Ponderingwindow · 07/05/2022 16:50

I let my 13 year old have a TikTok account, but purely for viewing. She isn’t allowed to post anything and I have her account login so can easily monitor that. I can also login to her account and see what sort of videos the algorithm is feeding her.

I think 9 is too young, but I suppose if it is only used in combination with a parent, then it isn’t really the same as giving a 9 year old an account. It’s more something they do together which could actually be really positive. It’s been hard to find things to really engage my child’s attention. A shared hobby would be really valuable for maintaining communication as the child enters the difficult pre-teen years.

justfiveminutes · 07/05/2022 16:54

I teach children of a similar age and most of the class have Tik Tok despite my best efforts. I expect your sister has decided that she will allow it with supervision and restrictions. Many parents do allow unfettered access so she is being more cautious than many. If she is supervising content and who can see it, and monitoring who she follows, and has access to the account, and watches it with her, then there's minimal risk I think and she's being better prepared than many who are given free access via their smartphones at 11 or 12 when they go to secondary school.

girlmom21 · 07/05/2022 16:54

I personally think anyone under the age of 16 is too young for it and anyone over the age of 18 is too old for it 🤷‍♀️

But you can't control what you see

Yes.

And like I said, if the mum has full control over the account and is the one posting the videos, I can't see the issue.

You can control the privacy so only certain people can view them, and if mum is the one doing the posting, she can also control what her daughter sees, no?

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 07/05/2022 17:06

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/05/2022 16:56

But you can't control what you see

But the mum can control what her daughter sees, by vetting the videos and only allowing her daughter to watch once she's decided they're safe.

It doesn't say the 9yo has unrestricted/unsupvervised access to TikTok.

Michellebops · 07/05/2022 19:56

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

I do control what I see though.

I only "follow" specific people/friends and only see their posts

My day is 6 and doesn't watch it unsupervised
