To wonder exactly how loud these dominoes games are?

Article in the Guardian reports on controversy over noisy dominoes players in a public square in London with the complicating factor that most of the players in question are black so any sanctions could be indirectly discriminatory.

I believe that if things have come this far, there must be a fair amount of noise but am struggling to imagine it. My only experience with dominoes was with a miniature travel set on folding table under a tarp on a rainy camping trip, which was a quiet and depressing affair. Has anyone witnessed these raucous games?

Jamdom I think it's called, quite different from darts, dominoes and crib in the WMC.
Loads more fun than the latter but I also wouldn't want to live beside a venue.

@NickAndJay that is what I thought pétanque was like. Not in the South of France village I was in. Men getting way too carried away with the old pastis. Quite a few mairies in France had to put the kibosh on pétanque after 11pm because of the noise.

I don't believe the reporting in that article one little bit. Think it's far more likely young men congregating, with music on too loud, smoking spliffs is the problem

What?

The article literally says that the ruling was that "Theophile and his friends could still face jail if they breach a court order by “playing loud amplified music, drinking alcohol and shouting and swearing”.

So not the domino playing causing the problem then but the shouting, swearing, loud amplified music etc.

And that another more suitable area nearby had been set aside by the council for playing dominoes etc.

I’m now picturing this as the game of pétanque from Le Tour de Gaule d'Astérix, which I believe takes place on the Marseille leg of the tour. 😀

@iklboo This is what passes for casual discourse here. We've been here before. That poster stopped short of basically saying "black boys", a poster upthread even said some "cultures" are "more excitable than others". Smile But always remember no-one can be racist because their cousin's neighbour's friend's school lunch lady has a son with a black friend!
