Passport query

With all these new rules about passport validity and people being turned away at the airport, I just wanted to ask if anyone can give a definitive answer!

My passport is valid from 25.04.2013 to 25.04.2023.
Would this allow me to travel to the EU and back for a week in mid August 2022?

TIA x

Yes. It needs to have been issued within 10 years of the date of travel, and you need to have at least 3 months left after the date you plan to return home.

The issues all seem to be a) where people have months added, which you don't or b) where Ryanair are making it up as they go along.

So mine should be ok for travelling in August then? Sorry if I'm being thick, my brain is hurting from it all and all the conflicting stories

Yes. Your passport expires April 2023 and you need to have 3 months left after the date you plan to come back, so you could be in the EU until 24th January 2023.

As you never had any additional months added to your passport you don't need to worry about anything else.

Pippa12 · 06/05/2022 15:39

does it not go from the date of issue now?

i feel the same, my mind is blown with all the passport fiascos!

ImInStealthMode · 06/05/2022 15:48

@Pippa12 It needs to meet 2 requirements.

  1. It must be less than 10 years old on the day you travel into the EU - check date of issue.
  2. It must have at least 3 months left after the day you plan to depart the EU - check date of expiry.

So if OP was travelling 15th August 2022 her passport would need to have been issued on or after 16th August 2012 and if she's coming home 22nd August 2022 it would need to have at least until 23rd November 2022 left on it.

It must meet BOTH these requirements, but passports like the OPs that never had any additional months added (so just last exactly 10 years) only really need to worry about the valid for 3 months bit.

The problem has come where people have passports with extra months added, so they might have 3 or 6 or 7 months left until expiry, but it was issued more than 10 years ago.

jacksmannequin · 06/05/2022 16:09

Can I just check mines okay?? And my sons ? Mine issued April 2014 and my sons issued December 2019
They both expire the same months

All this news is making me paranoid too!

ImInStealthMode · 06/05/2022 16:16

@jacksmannequin What are the issue and expiry dates on each exactly, and when are you travelling?

jacksmannequin · 06/05/2022 16:21

@ImInStealthMode
child's issue date: 16th dec 2019 and expiry date 16 Dec 2024
Adults issue date: 15 April 2014 and expiry date 15th April 2024

We're Travelling this month

ImInStealthMode · 06/05/2022 16:26

@jacksmannequin

Thanks. You're both absolutely fine.

Because your child only has a 5 year passport you don't need to worry about the 'less than 10 years old' bit of the ruling, because it always will be. He can use it until 2024 and would need to be travelling home by 15th September.

Likewise because yours is a straight 10 year passport with no extra months added, yours is fine until 2024, and you'd need to travel home by 14th January that year.

(The above applies for travel within the EU, other countries may vary).

jacksmannequin · 06/05/2022 16:34

@ImInStealthMode you're a star, thanks for that! I know it probably seems simple but you start to question things with all these stories popping up scaring me !

ImInStealthMode · 06/05/2022 16:48

No problem! I need to know for work so have had to wrap my head round it :)

Unfortunately a lot of the scare stories in the media the past few days have involved Ryanair who have been going by a completely different version of the rules, that they seem to have made up themselves! I've read today that they are now complying by the actual rules going forwards.

pencilpot99 · 06/05/2022 16:53

I've just sent off passport renewals for two of my children. Fingers-crossed they don't take months and months to process the bloody things. It's a nightmare at the moment. Not surprised you're confused @td4.

dementedpixie · 06/05/2022 16:55

My ds's passport renewal only took 3 weeks (got new one back last week)
