13 yo DD is having a terrible time at school at the moment, we will have a decision on an EHCP within the week. She’s almost at the top of the waiting list for an ADHD assessment although I’ve already been told by a consultant psychiatrist it’s 99% certain she will be diagnosed.
She’s very far educationally behind her peers and always has been since primary, she seems to have given up all hope of learning, this has been exacerbated by the school teachers not really understanding ADHD and her learning difficulties and in many instances just making things worse, this is in spite of personalised plans and meetings with the EP. School communication seems difficult and I’m aware it must be hard in mainstream because of class sizes. Basically all of the recommendations the EP has given aren’t yet being used, which is frustrating to say the least when you’re being called by deputy heads who have no idea.
She is always thrown out of class for not focusing, talking, standing up and walking around etc - classic adhd. As a lot of you likely know ADHD kids are very quick to anger and can’t regulate themselves back into logical thinking it’s just RED - so this makes things worse especially when you have teachers trying to talk to you and reason - not gonna happen in that state.
Im wondering more and more if mainstream is the right place for her or whether if she gets her EHCP an SEN school. My older DD goes to an SEN school but she has moderate learning disabilities so it’s not the same, my 13yo DD is just extremely academically behind coupled with her clear ADHD, the psychiatrist also noted some ASD traits. Socially she has friends and is independent in walking to school, can go to the cinema with friends etc “street smart”.
What would you do? I’m so burnt out recently I can’t think straight.
