…to sell a Christmas gift?

My partner and I got tickets from a family secret Santa, the gigs this weekend.
Our little one is unwell and I can’t see her being well enough by the weekend for us to go out.

I suggested we sell the tickets.

IAMU - they were a gift and you shouldn’t benefit financially.
IANBU - sell them and use the money for something else.

Of course it’s fine to sell them if you can do so easily.

It's perfectly acceptable to sell them rather than throw the money down the drain.

The present was given to you, you now own it, you can do whatever you want with it.

merryhouse · 05/05/2022 13:22

Would there be a problem with giving them away?

Howaboutnope · 05/05/2022 13:29

I would ask the family member first, I.e could they look after the little one so you can go out to the gig otherwise would they be OK with you selling the tickets on since you can't go.

I wouldn’t leave the baby if she’s still as unwell - she’s breastfed and very clingy. We have child care arranged.
My partner thinks it’s rude to sell them but the people who gave us them don’t like the band and have plans this weekend anyway.

would you sell for face value?

Selling them feels very wrong to me. You shouldn't be profiting financially from the gift. I would try and give them away so they don't go to waste.

HeckyPeck · 05/05/2022 13:56

If you sell them and use the money to book another gig or event, I can't see why anyone would have a problem?

If I was the gift giver I'd rather that than it going to waste.
