...that their word for step child/children is bonus! Bonus child/children 😊 Also with a colleague from Denmark who said the same. They were generally surprised at the term step......I just think the word bonus is so much nicer and more positive we should start using (imagine young children be referred to as a 'bonus'....self esteem and all that...) .....be very interested in others views

I've heard people use that in this country too. It's nice

nzborn · 05/05/2022 08:56

Love it

rivierliedje · 05/05/2022 09:25

In Flanders they use plus. So Pluskind, plusmama, pluspapa

FlindersKeepers · 05/05/2022 09:31

It is Bonus in the Netherlands as well.

CrystalCoco · 05/05/2022 09:47

I agree with a PP, it's lovely if they are actually a bonus but my two (one in particular) are definitely not a bonus.

psychomath · 05/05/2022 09:53

I thought this was going to be about how their word for 'finished' is 'slut' Blush The actual topic is much more wholesome!

Bonus is nice.
nb: "step" isn't meant to be a negative word, just a factual (precise) one.

Several of my Facebook contacts or my first cousins, one (step) removed. I don't like them any less for not being simple first cousins or simple second cousins.

@Dimples13 I am also anxious not to step on the toes of the other sets of grandparents so always check with their mum before buying Christmas or birthday presents. She says she is so glad that her children have so many people in their bonus family to love them.

Yup my husband is Danish so I am DSSs bonus mum and his is my bonus DS. Although we live in Switzerland so when taking in German he is still my Stiefsohn (stepson).

Funnily enough I was in Zurich last week but the subject never came up, love that they do and also the Netherlands 😊

I live in Denmark and I love bonus mum! It’s a respected thing here. Mother’s Day was on Sunday and cake shops did “best mum, lovely mum, grandma and bonus mum” cakes as all are common and acceptable. It’s great!
