To think we are conditioned to be objectified?

I am currently looking for a swimsuit - I am trying to find shorts as I don't want my butt hanging out. I cannot seem to find them, literally everywhere pretty ouch only sells knickers and the ones the don't are ugly.

Why aren't the mens shorts knickers? Why are womens swimsuits always geared toward sex appeal even the modest looking ones?

I have just had enough of so many things subliminally aimed at women to focus on our bits. It's as if we are just conditioned to accept it.

I also am actually proud of my body have no issue covering it because I don't like it. I love my body, but that doesn't mean I want my butt cheeks on show or knicker type bikinis.

AIBU to think there should be more choice for women?

I agree with your general broader point. Women and indeed girls are viewed as somehow public property hence "give us a smile love" or that kind of nonsense. But in 2022 there's a lot of choice. Even if you have to buy swim shorts from the mens section, there's choice. Yes yes patriarchy, beauty standards - I totally get it. But you will find a bikini, tankini or swimsuit that works for you even from a cursory ASOS search.

Rovinonmars · 04/05/2022 22:04

Absolutely! Why the fuck do our costumes have such high legs, that mean we have to shave our public hair or have it all hanging out? In fact - why are we shaving our pubic hair? Why do men get shorts as standard? Why are their hairy pube legs deemed ok?
My DD wears shorts and a rash vest swimming. She's 6. Girls costumes are ridiculous. I refuse to let the objectification start this young.

Summerhillsquare · 04/05/2022 22:10

Indeed. I've bought mens swimming shorts for this reason. We're told our only worth is how pleasing our bodies are to men though.

josil · 04/05/2022 22:11

@VladmirsPoutine I see your point but I would still like to look stylish! There are no stylish shorts for women as swimming costumes I could find after half hour of looking asos didn't have Any.

Mens on the waist are unlikely to fit me.

It's also the bigger picture it is making girls and women feel it's standard from a young age. I never even really questioned it until now I realised o don't feel comfortable with my butt out and have struggled to find something other than knicker bottoms.

I guess what I'm saying is it's not about me as an individually as much as it is about the message being sent to women

I disagree. There are plenty of shorts , swim skirts, etc available. Not sure where you are looking but there's a whole market of women who love that sort of swimwear.

PumpkinsandKittens · 04/05/2022 22:18

I think YABU about the swim suit,
my mum bought me one wear the bottom is a skirt! There are definitely options and that was from Sainsbury’s so on the high street

PumpkinsandKittens · 04/05/2022 22:21

Where* (really need an edit button!)

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/05/2022 22:32

I don't see many proper swim shorts for women on the high street. I don't want one of those little skirt suits. You have to go digging online for coverage tbh.

I am glad that men's swim clobber isn't the little knickers though, as I think there'd be a lot more vomiting at the pool if there were bollocks hanging out visibly.

Moonface123 · 04/05/2022 22:36

There are lots of womens swim shorts on Amazon, all different lenghts, as well as skirted swim costumes.
Tescos clothing do swim skirts for £10.00 and Tankinis.

DillyDilly · 04/05/2022 22:37

Next online have several pairs of swim shirts in their women’s section.

Personally, I’d hate to wear swim shorts - tan marks, wet fabric clinging to skin after swimming, etc. Me wearing a bikini is nothing to do with being objectified.

Indicatrice · 04/05/2022 22:40

YANBU, of course you can find some shorts/tankinis if you shop around, but the overwhelming majority of swimwear is bikinis, then followed by one piece suits.

Even in the tankini/swim leggings niche, there are limited options. Rash vests are mostly all the same, with very high necks or there are very low cut tankinis.

I also wore inadequate imitations of swim shorts/tankinis in the 1990s/2000s and fielded lots of stares from strangers. it’s more accepted now but I still get stares at times.

NamelessNancy · 04/05/2022 22:40

Having the option of wearing mens' shorts doesn't make things somehow equal. They are not cut or styled for women and getting a decent fit can be difficult. Not a problem men face if they don't want to wear budgie smugglers or a mankini. YANBU.

@NamelessNancy exactly my point
