Dog walkers taking their dogs to poop outside other peoples property

Frequently I see dog owners/walkers taking their dogs to regularly poop outside other peoples’ homes. They are generally good at clearing up the mess ( although tend to dump the poop bag in the nearest private bin). However, I’ve concluded that this is a contrived strategy to avoid any pooping on their own patch. ( I WFH and my office directly overlooks my street…. I can’t help but notice). It’s generally public land so I can’t see any legal issue but isn’t it rather cheeky?

My dog won't poo in the garden. She could be out there for ages but won't even have a wee unless out the gates.

Mine needs about 5/10 mins walk to
poo. I try and avoid near houses. He prefers to go on grass. He definitely has set spots. There’s a terrace house with weeds poking out of it and he makes a beeline for that if I’m not quick he goes there (the houses open directly onto footpath no others have weeds)

I wonder if you’re talking about me, OP.

My dog gets a walk around the block at night, same route. It’s not exciting, it’s just an opportunity for him to stretch his legs, have a sniff and go to the loo before bed. He has access to the garden and has much longer walks in the day but doesn’t like ‘going’ in the garden in general so we have to go around the block. Anyway, if he does poo on the walk around the block, it’s always in the same place. I assume because it’s just because that’s the point at which his bowels have received enough exercise stimulation. I always pick up but I can see that if you were to notice him doing it, you might assume I had some sort of issue with you. I don’t. My dog just has clockwork bowels.

I can't force my dog to poo in front my own property, he needs the walk to loosen things up so it's inevitable that he will do his business outside someone else's house. I do however pick up any mess and dispose of it appropriately. People should not be using a private bin I agree, but otherwise you are being totally unreasonable.

My dog doesn't poo on demand. I walk them and wherever they stop to do their thing I clear up. Of course it's not going to be on my 'home patch' if I'm walking them! Ideally they'd hold it til we got to the park but they usually can't. I then take the bag to the nearest public waste bin - I would never put it in someone's private bin, that is a liberty!
As long as it's cleaned up (and disposed off properly) what's the problem?

I'm with you Op. Clearly, many people on here haven't had people deliberately take dogs onto their front lawns to poop. Where I live, we all have open plan lawns and this is commonplace and very, very annoying.

My private lawn is NOT your open space for doggy poos.

No, open plan lawns aren’t a thing here, that’s fair.

People often leave poo bags outside our front hedges and it's very annoying. I haven't been able to capture who they are on our CCTV yet but I will be having a word when I do! I think it's gross to dump bags of dog poo on the floor.

Booboobibles · 04/05/2022 15:00

Dogs tend to poo in the same places they’ve previously been or where other dogs have been. They don’t poo on command.

Some dogs poo whilst walking along leaving a trail behind them!

I don’t put bags in other people’s bins since some loony came running out of her house and literally tipped her wheelie bin upside-down leaving the bag on the pavement! Then called me a dirty b*** (as I ran away)!!! That’s what happens to people who spend too long looking out of their window at dog walkers😉.

Yes, it's vile. I would say to dog owners - walk them by all means but then take them home to shit in your own garden/outside your own house. God knows how anyone lets their kids play in parks/on beaches/anywhere public these days knowing it's all just giant dog toilet, whether picked up or not it's still contaminating the area. It's SHIT by the way, calling it poop/poo doesn't make it cutesy or less offensive. Yes we all know other animals do this outdoors but that is nature, not human choice, and I've never seen a street, beach or park full of badgers/deer/stoats or whatever. Cats tend not to be driven around and walked in public areas or taken to beaches and childrens' areas.

oioimatey · 04/05/2022 15:11

I don't want a dog's shit in my bin, thanks. Why on earth would you think it's okay to put your dog's shit in my bin? Carry it with you.

Momicrone · 04/05/2022 15:50

Putting poo in private bins is awful

TabbyM · 04/05/2022 15:58

It annoys me that people think it is ok to let their dog into front gardens to piss on the (tiny) hedge across the road

junglejane66 · 04/05/2022 15:58

Maybe the dog owners are following the old saying of 'dont shit on your own doorstep'?

Duchess379 · 04/05/2022 15:58

Dogs pick up the scent of other animals & pee/poop in the same area to 'mark' their territory. I don't think this dog is purposely picking on your house to annoy you.
