To ask to leave about half an hour early so I don’t miss a delivery?

DH normally WFH but is in the office today and I have a parcel that is due to be delivered. If I miss it it’s a bit of a pain because the sorting office is only open 8am-10am every day.

So AIBU to ask to go half an hour early? It won’t impact anyone but I will miss a bit of a meeting.

Not unreasonable to ask to leave early at all!

Offer to work through lunch and say you need to be home earlier because DM has the dentist and can't get the kids or that you need to collect an important prescription before the chemist closes.

One thing I miss from covid was the flexible working was prioritised more. It appears we've now completely reverted to a rigid office 9-5. As long as you get the work done, what time you do that within really shouldn't matter.

Sorry OP, asking to leave a meeting early on the one day you're in the office, just to get a parcel sounds poor - it might be different if you were there every day.
I'm a fan of flexible working but it feels flakey.

Also - why is it better for you to miss your work which has obviously caused you enough concern to consult MN, than ask your DH to get it?

i don’t work from home @GroggyLegs - DH does.

I would never, ever do this. I think it is really unprofessional and I’m cringing just reading it.

Snowiscold · 04/05/2022 11:01

Can’t you ask to have it delivered to one of the many authorised companies/corner shops etc that exist for this purpose?

housemaus · 04/05/2022 11:08

Wouldn't even bat an eyelid at this - I let someone leave early for an eyebrow wax last week Grin. We trust everyone and they make the time up if it's needed.

So yes, to me that seems perfectly reasonable. But lots of places aren't, where I used to work this would have been as shocking as asking if you could order a stripper and a crate of Stella to the office.

Apologies, in that case yes if it's a team meeting & you're normally reliable I'd ask to leave! 😂

I wouldn't have an issue with it, I focus on whether staff are doing their jobs well, not rigid attendance at every meeting (unless it is something important, e.g. safeguarding training) and being present every minute of the day if not being there isn't going to cause an issue. I'd assume you'd just be working from home that day (although I know you've said this isn't an option for you OP).

Would be completely fine where I work.
