AIBU to ask how long does it take for recruiters/HE to shortlist candidates

I have just applied for my “dream” job and was wondering how long should I wait to find out if I have been shortlisted for an interview.
I really feel that I am a great fit for the role and hope to hear back soon.

My friend who is also job hunting has just heard back, less than 24 hours after applying, that she has not been shortlisted. Fortunately she is a good sport and very upbeat.

How long has it taken you to hear back?

I work in recruitment and depends on how popular the job is, but mostly 1-2 days before I would give a candidate a call. If its through a recruitment agency, I would make contact with the person hiring, it definitely helps, I've gotten people jobs on the basis of showing enthusiasm over skill set.
Also don't assume if you don't hear back its not because you're not suitable, we get all sorts of delays from clients in the background.
Good luck!

I've just recruited at my current job and also applied for a job (shh, don't tell my boss...). It can depend on so many factors. I got some applications I knew I wanted to take forward but was busy and didn't get around to contacting for a few days. Others I wasn't sure about and wanted to review again after the closing date.

The job I applied for took about two weeks to contact me to invite me to an interview.

I work in HR and can be anything from a few days to never depending on the organization sadly

I'd follow up after 1 week no updates

stevalnamechanger · 03/05/2022 22:40

It also depends if the job has a displayed closing date . If it does likely up to 2 weeks following that

Justwonderinghow · 03/05/2022 22:51

Thank you for the replies everyone. It seems that anything between a few days an 2 weeks is reasonable waiting time to wait.
When my friend heard back with less than 24 hours of applying she said:”Well, they probably already save someone lined up for the job”.

If it’s the civil service, expect a long wait. It takes ages to sift the applications.

@hepaticanobilis your secret’s safe with me!
Good luck.

I've had less than an hour to 3 weeks or so - had given up on getting that interview but did and got that job.

I work in recruitment for a big company. It depends on a number of factors. First of all the closing date we don't respond to anyone until after that date. After the closing date we have a meeting with hiring manage how long this takes depends on our schedules/how quick managers are at scoring application forms. It's normally within a couple of days after the closing date but can be a week or more. It will be after that meeting and we gone through all the applications scores we would then contact candidates.
Good luck OP
