Help = does anyone know anything about braces? DS2's have gone horribly wrong

Apologies for the shameless abuse of AIBU for traffic Blush

DS2 (17) had train tracks put on today. He's just phoned from work to say that two of the caps have come off, and the wire has popped out of the end and is sticking out in his mouth and cutting him. What should we do? We can't contact the orthodontist at this time of night, and I'm worried about him going to bed with it like that. Should we cut the loose wire with wirecutters? I have fine ones meant for jewellery making, but will the orthodontist be pissed off if we cut it?

Have you got some dental wax to stick onto the wire ends until you can see the orthodontist in the morning?

Sparklingbrook · 03/05/2022 20:00

The red stuff from a BabyBel works as wax as a temporary fix.

Discovereads · 03/05/2022 20:01

Mine had braces and this sometimes happened.
We had an orthodontic kit with wax that you can put over the broken wire to stop the sharp end poking their cheek. Boots might have one,
If not, I think cutting the wire is your best bet. The orthodontist should be able to do an emergency appt tomorrow to fix things.

Greensleeves · 03/05/2022 20:02

I don't have any wax unfortunately, and no Babybels either. I should have got some in before he had them put on, I'm kicking myself now!

I had to do this with DD on a Friday-they cleverly did the orthodontic work in the morning and shut in the afternoon!🤦‍♀️ I had to cut it as short as possible with my jewellery making kit and then used wax to cover the sharp end until Monday morning-was awful but we managed. Good luck

Go to a large 24hour supermarket-they always have emergency dental stuff there

JanePrentiss · 03/05/2022 20:04

Use fine nail scissors to cut off the wire that is sticking out - same happened to dcs braces and this is exactly what orthodontist told us to do, they can retread some wire / sort braces when you get to see them.

Check for your nearest Boots that's open until midnight as well, they'll probably have something.

I'm a dentist OP.
Come across this loads of time in the out of hours service.
Should we cut the loose wire with wirecutters?
Yes
No the orthodontist won't be annoyed. They're going to have to replace the wire and recement the brackets anyway.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 03/05/2022 20:11

No advice to add but my DDs has done the same, is it shoddy dentistry? I'm really surprised by it and a bit frustrated TBH.

caecilius1 · 03/05/2022 20:12

Very bad luck for that to happen the first day of a bond up too. Had he been eating something off the banned list ?
Wax isn't going to cut the mustard in this case. Get the protruding wire cut off. Good luck

caecilius1 · 03/05/2022 20:15

I think you're going to have to get used to this, it's a very lucky teenager who gets through a course of fixed ortho without a wire breaking, a molar band or a bracket debonding.

Greensleeves · 03/05/2022 20:31

Thanks all, I've sent DH out for Babybels and will dig out the jewellery wire cutters.

Cut the wire as close as to a secure bracket or the molar band as possible. Aim to end up with no protruding wire.
