Would you cook a chasseur spice mix that's BBD is Jan 2021?

Just that really! I've prepped the chicken and vegetables and have now realised that the Shwartz packet of chicken chasseur has a best before date of Jan 2021! Surly it's ok to use as it's only dry spices really so would you go ahead and use it?

Has it got garlic in?

VintageGibbon · 03/05/2022 18:50

Smell it. If it smells musty then no, but if it smells as it should, yes. DH is forever finding things with BBDs of last year and using them up. We haven't died or even felt queasy.

waterlego · 03/05/2022 18:50

I reckon I would, yes. Like you say, it’s mostly just dry herbs and spices really so the BBD is probably more about when the product tastes at its best rather than actually giving you food poisoning.

Libertaire · 03/05/2022 18:50

It’s a ‘best before’ date, not a ‘use by’ date. The two mean completely different things. I would definitely use the spice mix, without a second thought.

CityCommuter · 03/05/2022 18:53

@LightningAndRainbows yes it has garlic powder in it if that counts...

Yep I would. Worst case scenario it'll be a little bland

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 03/05/2022 18:54

I wouldn't have even checked!

Oysterbabe · 03/05/2022 18:57

I'd use it. Might be a bit shit but won't cause any harm.

BethAfra · 03/05/2022 19:00

I would. I have quite a few jars of ancient spices and will only throw them out if they lose their flavour.

LightningAndRainbows · 03/05/2022 19:09

If it's in a sachet and completely dry then I would use it. If in a bottle and the top looks damp I would not use it.

CityCommuter · 03/05/2022 19:11

Ok thank you wise people! Will update later...

Of course.

ChanceNorman · 03/05/2022 19:34

Yes! It's just tasty, processed dust - not really anything in it to go off.

I'd provably still use it if it was far more out of date!

KrisAkabusi · 03/05/2022 19:39

Wouldn't occur to me not to use it!

DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 03/05/2022 19:41

Haha, of course! I've used stuff much older than that. As long as its dry with no signs of mustiness.

viques · 03/05/2022 19:42

That is not the sort of thing I even check dates on!

Hankiewair · 03/05/2022 19:44

A couple of weeks ago I used a tuna Napolitana mix that was dated 2013. Nobody died.

GrumpyPanda · 03/05/2022 19:49

It won't poison you, but it probably won't add much flavour to the dish in particular if it's crushed spices. As a rule these don't keep well after a year or so, which is why it's a much better idea to get whole spices and crush them in a mortar right before using.

CityCommuter · 04/05/2022 15:52

Glad to say the chicken chasseur turned out well! In fact kids asked if they could have it for dinner again today! That's a no btw as can't have same dinner 2 days in a row though I know a lot of people do to save time...

They'll have to wait over a year for more spice to go out of date
