To ask who needs a loo phone??

Prepared to be flamed as a peasant but when I go to big standard hotels, there’s either no phone or one by the bed. When I go to nice, nice hotels there is always one close to the loo as well. I mean, why? Who needs a business conversation THAT badly?? What am I missing??

It reminds me of the episode of Friends, where Joey gets the posh apartment and shows the rest of them round. He proudly shows off the telephone next to the loo, and Monica says “NEVER call me from that phone!”

RubyRubyRubyDiamond · 03/05/2022 17:02

Don’t watch friends but - exactly that

Maybe for elderly or infirm people, in case they have a fall? Someone I used to work with had a major fall in the bathroom, and if her husband hadn't been home, she would have had to lie there until he was.

RubyRubyRubyDiamond · 03/05/2022 17:51

possibly but I’m not sure how many infirm people the very very nice Ritz style hotels get to warrant them though?

Is it so that you can phone down for toilet paper if you run out, maybe?

But yes, I agree with you. Why?

fortifiedwithtea · 03/05/2022 17:58

Until this year I had never stayed in a hotel that had a phone in the bathroom. It was a very expensive room. Tbh I was more excited that our suite had a doorbell.

Momicrone · 03/05/2022 18:35

Yes I've always thought it was weird, similarly I also think taking mobile phones to the toilet is a bit gross

StoneofDestiny · 03/05/2022 18:39

Because you are more likely to slip in the bathroom on a tiled floor or head there if you are being sick etc. it's a safety thing.

thefirstmrsrochester · 03/05/2022 18:43

Oh god, mobile phone use whilst on the loo is grotesque. I had a work related phone call towards the end of which I heard the toilet flush. The filthy bugger had been sat on the loo the whole time 🤮

steff13 · 03/05/2022 18:46

I think it's probably for safety. Slipping and falling in the bathroom is the most common household accident. That surely translates to hotels as well. If you slip and can't get up for some reason, at least you have a chance of calling someone for help.

Bounceyboing · 03/05/2022 19:16

If it was safety though surely it would be nearer the bath or shower. Idk, just seems so odd

Clevs · 03/05/2022 19:25

Aren't the phones normally on the wall though? So if you slipped and fell you wouldn't be able to reach it anyway!

z0fl0ra · 03/05/2022 19:58

i stayed in a very nice hotel recently in a suite (not boasting we were upgraded and it was for a very fancy event) and the bathroom had the toilet in a separate room with a door which was just a toilet with a phone on the wall next to it so wouldn’t be useful for slipping in the shower etc, I thought this was bizarre and clearly for just the super posh, i also assumed it was to ask for more toilet roll but i’m glad i’m not the only one who thought it odd! @

Floydthebarber · 03/05/2022 20:02

I think there was an episode of Frasier too where it showed his bathroom with a phone in. Is it to show that you can afford to have a phoneline installed all the way to your loo? Or in a hotel, really, really urgent room service?

ZealAndArdour · 03/05/2022 20:05

Yeah, I stayed at the Conrad St James a few weeks ago and was surprised by the phone next to the loo. Can’t imagine a scenario where I’d need to summon the help without wiping my arse and making myself decent first.

Walkingthedog46 · 03/05/2022 20:05

That’s so they can phone you back at your convenience!!! 🤣

And like the PP, the toilet was in its own separate enclosed room within a huge bathroom, and the shower was a separate room off the bathroom too, so it’d be no use if you’d fallen, unless you slithered across the room and into the loo sopping wet.

Jules912 · 03/05/2022 20:13

I don't often stay in hotels posh enough to have a phone in the bathroom but did once actually use one to order room service from the bath ( I got out before it arrived!) when feeling hungover rough on a business trip, though admit there may have been an element of novelty value.

Loo phones are good if you are at risk of cardiac issues. "Unfortunately, if your heart isn't able to send enough blood to your stomach, it can cause severe issues – from sharp abdominal pain to diarrhea, nausea or vomiting" - all things that might send you into the bathroom. Also, straining to poo can cause "blood pressure rise, which can trigger cardiovascular events such as congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, acute coronary disease, and aortic dissection." (Journal of Clinical Hypertension). Bet you wish you hadn't asked...

That's what I thought! They're usually on the wall above the loo (not that I make a habit of staying in fancy places).

They'd be better off with those red triangles on the string from the ceiling like Peter Kay's Nana, if they're bothered about you slipping.

Bounceyboing · 04/05/2022 20:19

Glad it’s not just me who’s confused 😁

XenoBitch · 04/05/2022 20:20

I remember viewing a house that had a loo phone.

PinkButtercups · 04/05/2022 20:34

It's for conscience of guests that received calls via their hotel rooms.

I like to think it's more of a constipation hotline Grin.
