To be upset for these families turned back at the airport

I've just read about another family turned back at the airport because some of the passports weren't valid anymore. I know it's their fault that they hadn't realised they now needed six months more than their expiry but hell we're all human we make mistakes.

This was a family with little children all excited for their holiday, months of saving and preparation. I'd have been tempted to turn a blind eye. I don't think I could bear to refuse them., and hopefully not get into trouble for it. Anyone else feel like this?

OP posts:

No, you didn't. We had digitalised passports for years previously. It was all encased into the first page and hologram sealed. Your signature was on there but you didn't physically sign your actual passport.

JingsWullie · 03/05/2022 00:00

You get a wee booklet with special instructions on where and how to sign it now when you receive your passport. It's a new thing.

Really I guess it's minor in terms of what we've actually lost in this post Brexit utopia but ffs it's annoying when people try to make out that even this isn't anything different. It is.

This thread has reminded me that I never see the phrase "judgy pants hoiked up" on this forum any more.

Marvellousmadness · 03/05/2022 03:19

Yabu!!!
Yes it is sad for them. But they should have double checked the rules. Especially when traveling with kids etc.

FiveShelties · 03/05/2022 03:34

I have always renewed mine before the six months - I thought it had to be done that way.

This and this is why I have the empathy that some others are seriously lacking on this thread

Some hard hearted individuals on this thread 🙄

As someone said, why so complicated. The expiry should be the date on the passport with perhaps a month extra. Then we wouldn't be getting this awful confusion.

I agree with that. I keep having to double and triple check my own passport. Issued April 2013 and expires April 2023. We travel to Spain at the end of June and return early July, so I seem to be OK, though I will have to send it for renewal after we return.

This sort of thing does make me nervous though. It is unsettling and needs to be simplified.

Peccary · 03/05/2022 04:13

Assuming these are the family under discussion? Passports with almost a year until expiry date refused because of lack of clarity on the 10 years. Even the EU spokesperson in this report saying its not black and white.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-61220358
I've just sent mine for renewal a year before expiry just to be safe.

Carry on judging and calling people stupid though!

Whooshaagh · 03/05/2022 04:15

I flew from Leeds Bradford to France 2 years ago and my passport was never checked at Leeds.
I was stood near the gate on my phone. Guy checking passports in queue so I ended phone call to join queue. The guy walked away as I joined and the woman on the desk was told all passports had been checked in the queue.
I cba to say anything.

Vikinga · 03/05/2022 04:37

Years ago it happened to me. I don't understand the issue as long as it is in date but they are the rules so...

Err, it is you rambling, being shouty and swearing on every post.

Had too many Bank holiday drinks did we.

OP, rules are clear. And no, Border Control cant 'turn a blind eye'. 🙄

Shoxfordian · 03/05/2022 06:15

Yabu

All these adults had to do was work out basic rules before they went to the airport and all that upset to their kids would have been avoided

dementedpixie · 03/05/2022 07:09

Its not basic rules when some airlines/countries are interpreting them in different ways. Even the UK government is still seeking clarity as to whether the 3 months needs to be within the 10 year period when looking at a passport that has months added:

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

We are asking the European Commission to clarify the 10-year rule. Their guidance for Schengen border guards may not be updated until the spring of 2022. Until then, for some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.

Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.

balalake · 03/05/2022 07:09

Better to be turned back nearer to home than when in another country having flown.

Sorry for any children affected though.

Yeah that'll be it, it's Brexit. Course it is. Can't be any other reason. I mean there has NEVER been problems with passports being delayed before! It has NEVER happened!!! 🙄

Fuck me, this place sometimes! Hmm

For context, I sent for a new passport in February this year. Sent for DH's too. Both took 23 days to get to us, perfectly intact!

The rules are different because we are no longer in the EU.
Lets say a family take their summer holiday in the same resort in Spain or stay in their Aunt’s villa in France. Same every year. In the past they didn’t need 6 months on their passports. They knew they were in date and that was fine. They couldn’t travel the last couple of years due to Covid so this is their first year of travelling since Brexit and the rules changed.

No one looked at the passport rules because they go every year.

Yes they should have checked again but if the change in rules is due to Brexit then I don’t know what is.

MissChanandlerBong80 · 03/05/2022 07:16

I agree OP, I really feel for them. And I’m pretty sure I would have made the same mistake. The stated expiry date on my passport is over a year after its ‘real’ expiry date.

Clymene · 03/05/2022 07:37

It's this bizarre adding on of extra months that has caused all the issues. Do any other countries do that? The maximum validity of a passport is 10 years globally so I can see why this is causing issues.

Over a year? You renewed your passport over a year early? Confused

MissNothing1991 · 03/05/2022 07:39

I feel sorry for kids who's parents are that stupid that they cannot check their passports are valid before booking a holiday.

Neu · 03/05/2022 07:45

I'm not on the usual SM Facebook instagram twitter. I rarely read the news. I had no idea about this new rule.

Poor family, if they were in date they were in date. What's the point of an expiry date if it's not an actual expiry date? Are we going to have extra dates in our passports from now on to make it clear?

The maximum added was 9 months extra

ifonly4 · 03/05/2022 08:03

I sympathcise, but it's a known fact you need six months.

Someone turning a blind eye and letting them through, would lose their job - that wouldn't be worth the risk for many.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/05/2022 08:11

They will probably be crowdfunding next to beg for the money for another holiday!

I hadn't thought of that, but you could easily be right ...

How many times do we need to say it's 3months not 6 months so your facts are wrong

Norush4 · 03/05/2022 08:19

I think it's easy to get confused I won't be risking it with my passport I will make sure I order a new one when it's due to run out the year before!
