Getting measured in a shop

Thingsthatgo · 02/05/2022 12:28

Interested to know what people think about this... is it unreasonable to go into a shop and get measured to say a bra, or children's shoes or a ring size with no intention (or pretence) of buying anything from the shop? Does it make a difference if it's a small independent shop rather than say M and S or Clarks?

I think it's incredibly rude.

WeCouldBeSpearows · 02/05/2022 12:34

Yes it's unreasonable.

The staff get paid out of the profit from sales. It's not okay to use up their time with no intention of paying for it.

Oldenoughtobedead · 02/05/2022 12:41

Not just rude it’s stupid. If you value the measuring service then you need to support it by buying something otherwise it could close down before you need it next.

respectmysex · 02/05/2022 13:15

Different brands fit in different ways. Measuring is just the first step, they will expertly fit bras and shoes as well. Rings, I have no idea.

Thanks for your opinions. I work in a small independent jewellers. Our stuff is fairly pricey because it's top end hand made and bespoke. I work in shop on my own usually, and I am busy all time (if I don't have a customer I am designing or dealing with emails). Nearly every day I have people coming in asking me to measure their finger so they can order a ring online. They don't even pretend to look around the shop. I don't really know how to respond to it to be honest... I want the shop to have a reputation for good service and I don't what snotty reviews left online, but I find it incredibly rude. It doesn't take ages to measure a finger, maybe 5 minutes, but it really annoys me!

Start selling ring sizers. They aren't expensive.

GiltEdges · 02/05/2022 13:40

Two options:

  1. Start selling ring sizers
  2. Start charging a fee e.g. £10 for ring sizing, which you're happy to reimburse against the cost of anything purchased in store.
BigYellowTaxiT · 02/05/2022 13:40

Start charging a fiver for your Ring Sizing Service. The charge can be waived if they buy a product from you.

Rickrollme · 02/05/2022 13:41

Agree I would charge for the service.

Excellent idea!

Glittertwins · 02/05/2022 14:08

Definitely charge and then refund against a purchase. There are ring sizers available online, even for the jewellers that use US sizing so it's not hard, just lazy so cash in on the laziness!

seven201 · 02/05/2022 14:16

I was going to suggest charging for the service or selling sizers. Nothing wrong with that. If anyone kicks up a fuss just explain how many hours wasted there are each week and that takes you away from designing etc.

I would never have the cheek to expect that for free!

Thingsthatgo · 02/05/2022 15:38

Yeah, thank you. Maybe I will start charging. It's usually pretty obvious who is seriously considering buying something, and for those people I wouldn't want to even mention a sizing charge (seems petty if they are spending 10k or more!). But for the people who don't even look round the shop I shall tell them it's five pounds per finger! That sounds seriously wrong! Grin

Yes I think if you phrase it like that @Thingsthatgo you could get yourself into a whole different business 😂

ThinWomansBrain · 02/05/2022 15:50

I have had my feet measured (brand with wierd sizing) and not bought anything because nothing in my size I liked, but to expect measuring with no intention of purchasing is unbelievable CFery.
Agree charge & reimburse against services - or if they're really blatant ans say it's so they can order online at the outset, just tell them to get lost.

monkeysox · 02/05/2022 15:50

Ring sizes are standard very different to a bra or shoes which need to be fitted for that style and or brand.
If people just want to know their ring size they should buy a sizer?

carefullycourageous · 02/05/2022 15:54

They are really rude.

I think anyone shopping online should do the whole process online - draw round your bloody feet and work it out yourself.

I agree do not do it - say of course if you are buying a ring here we do not charge but if you are just wanting to know the size for a purchase elsewhere then I sell ring sizers or charge for the service.
