Can’t get through to midwife, day 3 and baby blues have kicked in so not sure if I am being irrational.

Is this normal?

I'd keep trying the midwife and also 111 if I couldn't get through to her

EdithGrantham · 02/05/2022 08:48

No idea if it's normal, and even if someone comes along saying it is I know I'd want to speak to someone IRL about anything I was worried about.
I couldn't get through to the midwife when I had a health concern about my baby when she was a week old, I rang the maternity department at the hospital and they were really helpful. You could also try the health visitor number?

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 02/05/2022 08:48

Yes its fine, most likely has taken in too much milk. If they do it after every feed then you should ask advice from the midwife

Imissprosecco · 02/05/2022 08:50

Keep trying the midwife if you're worried, but chances are they're just getting some of the gunk off their chest after birth. Babies can cough up mucus for a few days

Mummumtum · 02/05/2022 08:50

Yeah quite normal, probably taking too much milk

GreatCuppa · 02/05/2022 08:52

Babies stomachs are also tiny so if they take too much they vomit. It also always looks more than it is, depends on how ‘huge’, everybody’s definition is different. No harm asking the midwife, are they due to come and see you?

Owwlie · 02/05/2022 08:52

Was it very obviously yellow OP? Or like a creamy curdled milk. Creamy curdled milk is normal but yellow isn’t. How is the baby otherwise? 111 will almost definitely send you to A&E with a baby this age, they did for us with DD when she bought up mucus, but A&E doctors said they would rather see babies that young if parents had any concerns, rather than parents leave it.

MadameDragon · 02/05/2022 08:55

Breastmilk or formula? Projectile or not?
Babies vomit a lot, check it out but don’t worry unduly.

Dreambigger · 02/05/2022 08:57

Yes normal ...have had this!

Owwlie · 02/05/2022 08:58

Forgot to say, if you’re breastfeeding then the yellow would probably be colostrum. With DD it was mucus, rather than colostrum which is why we ended up in A&E

WalkerWalking · 02/05/2022 08:58

Very normal, there is often some residual mucus still in the stomach lining. Obviously carry on trying to get hold of the midwife, but don't panic in the meantime. Focus on whether the baby is well - good colour, calm breathing, normal temperature etc etc.

mrcow · 02/05/2022 08:59

Obviously keep trying your midwife, but I just wanted to ask if you are okay?

Years ago my newborn vomited up red/blood like milk and I had a full scale meltdown. I realised after that it was because I had mastitis and some blood had come from me which had discoloured it. It looked worse/more, as it was mixed in with the milk and took a while to make the connection. Obviously ask your midwife to check your baby, but have yourself checked out too.

Congratulations on your little one x

unravioling · 02/05/2022 09:00

Congratulations on your new baby!

At that age, I'd probably want to speak to someone to make sure all is well with the baby. If you can't get through to health visitors or midwives, maybe call 111. They can link you up with ooh GP.

Moltenpink · 02/05/2022 09:03

Please do seek a professional opinion. But my first baby had swallowed loads of fluid when being birthed, and was bringing it up for the first few days- it was watery and yellow. Day three he had a big vomit, that was the end of it all and he fed much better after that.

MrsMo21 · 02/05/2022 09:38

Quite normal. My DD did it often - used to stain her base sheet in her bassinet.
she did have reflux - try smaller shorter feeds but more often if you’re worried about intake.
DD is 10 months now and absolutely fine - it’ll be ok.

70sDuvet · 02/05/2022 11:13

Is it yellow or fluorescent yellow/greenish?

If the latter I would get it checked out as it could be bile and be something that does need to be looked at.

Hopefully nothing but best to be safe.

Congratulations on your new bundle 😘

LemonSwan · 02/05/2022 12:20

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies.

It was bright yellow so midwife is going to pop in and in the meantime said keep a close eye and go to a and e if it happens again or he appears lethargic or unwell/ declines etc.

I did another feed and realised my milk is also same bright yellow so I am going to assume it’s related and either he has an infection my breast milk is reacting to, or I have an infection/ mastitis etc.

Will keep updated…

I think very yellow milk is when it’s very fatty. Nothing to worry about. I think when they first feed it’s watery and more thirst quenching, and not as yellow, then as they continue the feed it gets fattier and more calorific, and probably more yellow.

my baby did this at about 10 days - she’d never previously been sick and just produced a huge amount and it was very yellow. I was at a big family party with 10+ people there who reassured me it was not unusual, and she was fine 🙂 it’s so stressful when you have a new baby though isn’t jt x
