out of date meat

I've just been bereaved in some quite rubbish circumstances. I wasn't feeling physically well before that. My partner doesn't understand why I am upset at all. Bearing all that in mind I'm not operating at my best.

I just made a sandwich for us to share and I have now realised the use by date on the (cooked) turkey was the 16th of April.

It didn't look great but also didn't stink or anything. Still, it's more than two weeks old, Christ.

Should we make ourselves sick?

Let him eat his half before you try yours and see.

whops · 01/05/2022 15:49

@LetitiaLeghorn both of us have eaten it, sorry if that wasn't clear.

I think that horse has bolted...

Crunchymum · 01/05/2022 15:52

Sorry for your loss OP.

Does your DP know about the date? You can try and make yourself sick if you think you can (I can't) let your DP decide for himself.

If it was sealed and didn't stink you might be alright. How did it taste? 😳

TheVolturi · 01/05/2022 15:53

Holy fuck that's not great. Sorry for your loss as well.

britneyisfree · 01/05/2022 15:53

Sorry for your loss....

I'd probably throw up if I'm being honest

LightningAndRainbows · 01/05/2022 15:54

No don't make yourself sick. You'll be sick soon enough.

spotcheck · 01/05/2022 15:55

Had it been opened?
I'm often amazed at how long things keep these days.

whops · 01/05/2022 16:04

@spotcheck it had. There is quite a high salt content which just might help I suppose. It's such a stupid mistake to make.

We would eat it & not be even slightly ill afterwards.

I trust my nose & sense of taste way more than any dates stamped on plastic wrap.

Sorry about your stress.

DixonD · 01/05/2022 17:24

You’ll probably be ok; I believe the dates have quite a large margin really because the producers do not want any liability. I often use meat a day or so out of date if it seems fine, but I have to admit, I wouldn’t willingly use something two weeks out of date.

Hallyup89 · 01/05/2022 17:28

If it smelt and tasted fine, it probably was. Expiration dates weren't a thing in the past. You'd know if meat was rancid, surely, plus you both ate it and neither of you noticed anything.

I think any nausea will be psychological. Sorry for your loss.

Helenahandkart · 01/05/2022 17:57

We eat out of date meat all the time. If it smelled/tasted fine, it probably is fine. Try not to worry.

Could be the horse is not going to be the only thing that's going to bolt then!

nearlyspringyay · 01/05/2022 18:30

I wouldn't have eaten that, sorry op.

TheVolturi · 02/05/2022 09:45

Are you both alright op?

whops · 02/05/2022 16:20

Thanks to everyone who offered condolences.

@TheVolturi Tbh I already felt pretty grim so it's hard to tell. Neither of us ate much of it but I don't know if that makes a difference. We also haven't eaten since which in my my case isn't unusual at the moment so I suppose he would show symptoms before me as far as nausea goes.

Apparently some types of food poisoning take a few days or more to kick in so I suppose it's a case of just hoping we get away with it.

@DixonD Yeah I couldn't believe it when I saw the date.

@Crunchymum Dp said it tasted and smelled fine but the last two pieces in the pack were a bit smelly to me. There was other stuff in the sandwich that could have masked it.

DP got food poisoning once before and it kicked in a few hours after eating the meal. It's been 24 hours now so fingers crossed.

Really sorry for your loss OP.

I think you’d have undoubtably shown signs of food poisoning by now, so I’m pretty sure you’ve had a lucky escape. You’d have sensed it being rank even though your mind isn’t in the job.

take care and I hope things get better for you and you’re able to take some time to heal from your loss.

PortalooSunset · 02/05/2022 17:36

I remember when I was a teen opening a pack of (in date) Bernard Matthews sliced cooked turkey and it was wriggling 🤢 Haven't been able to buy it since!
If it smelt and tasted OK and you're still alright now I reckon you'll be fine.
Condolences on your loss, and I'm truly sorry that your partner isn't stepping up to be supportive and understanding 💐

seensome · 02/05/2022 17:47

I don't think I can turkey slices again after reading this 🤢 I hope you're ok op.

OneTC · 02/05/2022 18:12

Makes a really big difference if you've only eaten a small amount actually so that's a plus.

Tbh that kind of processed meat is so cooked, nuked, pasteurised, disinfected etc and if kept in a reasonable quality, dry, fridge then there's not much that's going to happen to it other than dehydration

Sorry for your loss. I wouldn't stress about the turkey or make yourself sick

TheVolturi · 02/05/2022 20:36

I think you will be OK now op, got everything crossed for you FlowersFlowersFlowers
