To be sulking about the paint!

Disclaimer, I know I am being unreasonable. I just want to vent.

Bought some paint last week from B&Q - got three on their 3 for 2 offer. Two in one colour and a third in another colour. The two in the one colour were spot on - matched exactly the picture on the front of the pot.

Opened the third and it was much more pink than the picture on the front. In fact the picture doesn't show a pink tinge at all!

We've put some on the wall and let is dry. It's still quite pink! It should be an oatmeal.

So anyway, now I'm sulking that we've got to spend more money on even more paint! I'm cross that I didn't wait and but a sample (they didn't have any when I went in). And because money is tight, we need to wait a week before work expenses payments go in - I just wanted to get it done this weekend.

Riddiculous I know. So many more bigger problems. But I just wanted to vent.

You could try taking it back if it's an obvious difference. There may be a problem in the mix, often happens with browns where there has been too much red added.

Buy a small tester pot in the colour and if it's significantly different ask for a refund

PansyPetunia · 01/05/2022 09:58

Paint isn't the 'same' on the front of the tub. It's just an indication of colour. That's all

The tester is the true match but you didn't wait for stock to come in

Also, 2 tubs of identical paint will look very different in 2 different rooms due to walls, flooring, lighting etc. it's not an exact science

Which colour was it?

luxxlisbon · 01/05/2022 10:01

It’s annoying but yeah YABU.

Always, always, always do a tester and test on multiple areas in the room.
Colour looks different in different lights, against furniture, wall texture etc

You cannot go off the image on the tin.

ShirleyPhallus · 01/05/2022 10:02

I think a pinky oatmeal sounds lovely tbh, pink is very in just now! Much nicer than boring beigey oatmeal

MistyGreenAndBlue · 01/05/2022 10:03

YABU for wanting to paint your walls oatmeal. Live a little. Use the pink. Grin

MistyGreenAndBlue · 01/05/2022 10:05

Ha! Cross posted. Great minds

pigsDOfly · 01/05/2022 10:05

It's annoying but trying to judge the finished effect by the colour on the front on the tin is never going to work.

I would put it down to experience and get a tester for any paints I want in the future, even if it means ordering one and waiting a few days for it.

You've opened it so you can't take it back and ask for a refund, as pp suggested, it's not the shops fault that you bought the wrong colour.

cantkeepawayforever · 01/05/2022 10:05

It may be a fault - we got a brownish ‘brilliant white’ a few weeks ago that was exchanged without quibble, and the B&Q manager said it seemed common at the moment. If it’s different from the colour card (not the tin label) it’s worth checking.

Sally090807 · 01/05/2022 10:34

Just take it back and change it for another colour

Dahlietta · 01/05/2022 10:47

Also voting for 'embrace the pink'

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 01/05/2022 10:50

You can take it back. They will mix it again or refund you if you’re not happy.

Indicatrice · 01/05/2022 10:52

Not much sympathy, should have got a sample.

Freddiefox · 01/05/2022 10:55

qgat Is the other colour in the room, it will reflect on the oatmeal. If it’s blue or grey it can make it look like a pink tint

ThistlyPerf · 01/05/2022 11:03

There’s no guarantee even after getting a tester that the colour match will be the same. I bought a large tin of paint based on a lovely creamy pearl colour tester pot - the large tin was actually a sickly peach/ pink. In an attempt to tone it down I emptied the tester into the main one and the difference in colour was laughable. Luckily the shop agreed and exchanged immediately.

To be sulking about the paint!
stripeyflowers · 01/05/2022 11:05

Yes, paint hardly ever same colour on the tin - always have to do a sample on the wall in the same room and same place where paint is meant to go as lighting has a major effect on the say the colour comes out.

PansyPetunia · 01/05/2022 11:08

Maybe it was farrow and balls 'sulking room pink'

girlmom21 · 01/05/2022 11:13

I'd just use what you have and live with it for a while if moneys tight.
I've never known colours be that far out from the front of the tin.

EatYourVegetables · 01/05/2022 11:18

Use the pink, especially if money is tight.

We have been decorating our own houses for the last 20+ years, and I have helped my parents decorate theirs since I was old enough to hold a paintbrush. In all that time, I have never known paint not match the tin / colour card. Then just a couple of weeks ago, as I say, we got a creamy / brown colour in a brilliant white tub (Dulux), and this seems to be a 'thing' at the moment.

pooktline · 01/05/2022 15:41

Why don't you just take it back and change it?

Pennypinch · 04/05/2022 12:12

I was happy to embrace the pink. Sadly DD15 really didn't like it. To be fair, she put up her own money to change it (her bedroom) but it wasn't needed.

We went back to B&Q and they agreed the colour was pink compared to the picture on the front but also pulled off the colour pallet which is across the top of the shelves as these are what "customers should rely on" for the colour. Again it didn't match so they let us swap it for another colour.

I did ask about the tester pots and she said it wouldnt have made a difference in this case as the paint was a faulty colour.

In saying all that, I'm still quite embarrassed for my sulking on here!

Or the ubiquitous grey, everything seems to be grey, horrible.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 04/05/2022 13:07

I'm confused by these posts. I've been able to take back opened paint before just because the colour didn't turn out like I thought - granted that was a few years ago now but it was B&Q. I take it this isn't allowed anymore?

I always assumed you couldn't. But I did take it back and they swapped it to something else without issue really.
