My immune system seems to be quite low at the moment - what vitamins do you take that you find actually have a positive effect?

Better You Vitamin D + Vitamin K2, spray bottle (the red one).

Dufton · 30/04/2022 11:15

I take a strong vitamin D in the winter and a lower dose one through the summer.

I also take B complex and Ubiquinol.

veronicagoldberg · 30/04/2022 11:15

L5-HTP does wonders for my mood.

Livebythecoast · 30/04/2022 11:46

I take Neuro Night Complex that has 5-HTP, L-Theanine, vitamin B12, Magnesium & Botanicals in them. I order them from Amazon. They're about £18 or so for 3 months supply.

It's going to depend on what you are deficient in. Also so many things have co-factors that unless careful you can just end up deficient in something else .

For example magnesium is a co-factor of vitamin d. Magnesium is used in over 300 processes in the body and if depleted then this will have a knock on effect.
(If I go abroad somewhere sunny I always supplement magnesium or very quickly start to get sensitive teeth) Magnesium is required as a co-factor of vitamin d so increased d can mean depleted magnesium. There are studies that show that supplementing magnesium also can increase the body's synthesis of d from the sun.

I think magnesium baths are a good idea, I have bone broth for the potassium and a little extra sea salt for the sodium. Boron is also very important in trace amounts as is selenium.
There's not a one size fits all but I go with the above, plus plenty of natural daylight and good fats. Fat is so necessary for good brain and mental health and escorts many nutrients into our cells.

SenoraMiasma · 30/04/2022 12:53

@Buzzinwithbez

what good fats? Avocado, butter, cream?

Ferngreen · 30/04/2022 12:55

D but I bought a high dose one and feel it is probably unnecessarily ( thought my digestion has to cope with this) high. So try one that is rec daily allowance. Also get enough C in diet or tabs.

Buzzinwithbez · 30/04/2022 13:07

@SenoraMiasma yes! I understand kerrygold and president are some of the best. People have different ideas on dairy, personally I feel good on butter and cheese and don't bother with milk unless it's a small ingredient.. Omega 3 - oily fish (I can't bring myself to eat any type of fish) so I sometimes supplement it , also olive oil, macadamia nuts, walnuts (not cashews and peanuts).

My mental health went downhill after my third, then I realised that since I'd cut out dairy to try to reduce her reflux that I hadn't replaced the fat in my diet that would have provided me with. I took an omega 3 supplement and looked at other ways of increasing fat intake and soon was ok again..

Very low fat diets like the diet clubs prescribe really worry me for this reason. Especially when so much of being overweight is a symptom of mental illhealth.

1000mg of vitamin C at the onset of a cold has been a revelation. My normal snotfest is stopped or considerably shortened everytime.

Can i just ask re the 5htp please? I have long term mild depression due to a trauma. I have beennon prozac for years and it helps v much. When I try to come off it the depession and lack of mood regulation returns.
Would 5 htp help possibly? Also ive read that taking it by itself long term can lead to heart issues?

Ontobetterthings · 30/04/2022 13:55

Vitamin d

watcherintherye · 30/04/2022 13:58

Vitamin D3 + K2

Scianel · 30/04/2022 14:00

Vitamin D and iron, as I'd be deficient in both if I didn't.
I take iron bisglycinate which avoids the potential gastric issues.

It might help instead of the Prozac, but you can't take them together

BrioNotBiro · 30/04/2022 14:21

Collegen for joints. I'm quite sceptical about lots of supplements, but swear by this.

WeirdCatLady · 30/04/2022 14:22

Dd has a weakened immune system and takes Vitamin D, Vitamin C and Complete B along with manuka honey.

Fairyfalls · 30/04/2022 14:25

I take vitamin B12 if I don't take it for a few days I seem to have a low mood and feel abit miserable. Definitely helps me. Also take D3 and collagen tablets which help with my skin seem to glow abit more!
