Frustrated as why to people have to announce that you're quiet

Had this happen to me several times over the years.
Usually in a work context..as I'm not based in one place, I move around different settings.
Anyway there was a lady I'd worked with once before who was very extroverted and outgoing it seems, which is good.
I was meeting a couple of other new colleagues for that day. I introduced myself and then said lady just pipes up ' She's quiet!' about me.
Why? I don't see it designed as a compliment and usually have no idea how to react so I just laugh. But I really don't see the need.
Yes I'm quiet with people I don't really know. But i did make some conversation, I'm polite and helpful. I'll never be a hugely exteoverted person but so what.
Anyway it's happened a few times in life as I've said, anyone else? How on earth do you react?

Sounds like that ladies problem more than your problem to be honest, it wasnt an appropriate comment to make it that situation. If I was one of the new colleagues you were meeting I'd probably be judging her not you.

Just ignore it, you're quiet, they're rude. I know which I'd rather be! I'm quiet too, I find most people I meet in work love to talk so I just let them blather on, throw in lots of questions and they don't tend to notice that I'm an introverted/private person.

Also noticed that it's always about being quiet, nobody would ever say "she's talkative/loud"

I'd only met them once. I felt so awkward and embarrassed when she said it

I get this said to me too - it's a PA dig and really pisses me off Angry

And it's always from people who physically can't shut the fuck up, isn't it!!

I was having what I thought was a nice chat with a bloke the other day. He's very talkative, and I find him a bit overwhelming but pleasant enough, and I thought we were having a good discussion about a mutual interest. Then some people we were with joined us, and he went on and on about how shy and quiet I was. I really don't get it!

CheeseBoard2022 · 30/04/2022 08:32

I get this all the time. It says more about them than you, just ignore. There's nothing wrong with being quiet. I find the most interesting people are quiet.

CheeseBoard2022 · 30/04/2022 08:33

Oh I forgot to add it's always by people who dominate the conversation as well and don't let you get a word in edge ways. You answer their question are half way through before they change the subject back to themselves.

Coldnoseandtoes · 30/04/2022 08:35

I try not to let it annoy me. I'd rather be quiet than someone known for letting every thought in their head escape out of their mouth. I'm not quiet with friends, just with people I don't know well. Incessant blathering for the sake of it is exhausting.

stickygotstuck · 30/04/2022 08:37

I agree she shouldn't have said it. But I wonder, could she have thought she was being 'helpful'? Misguided, but trying to help (i.e. avoid future awkwardness inb we mind).

I am quiet. This would piss me off. However, DD is very quiet too and I know that she can come across as standoffish, so I occasionally will comment 'she can take a while to warm up sometimes' when she's failed to answer for the second time out of embarrassment. I do this less and less the older she gets, she'll have to learn to navigate that one on her own.

But you are not a child and do not need rescuing! She was terribly patronising.

And yes, funny how yu don't tend to be warned about loud people!

I hate this. I've had people say the same or 'shes shy' or 'why are you shaking your leg' ect ect. Because I'm bloody anxious, not shy and you pointing it out is just going to make it worse!
