AIBU to think this is JRM, proponent of hard Brexit, admitting it has failed?

He's talking some differences in trading relations.

The cost of a measure that isn't being brought in isn't a cost of brexit. That costs for some aspects of business go up is part of the swings and roundabouts - things sometimes go up for only some sectors all the time for a variety of reasons.

I think you are putting far too much weight on this to think it is even close to such an admissin.

Or is the thread title hyperbole to draw in those who want another ritual 2 mins hate thread?

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 30/04/2022 07:28

Isn’t it unbelievable? He’s actually publicly stating that to implement a key component of Brexit is not in the interests of the British. He then tries to pass this off as a win because we’re saving a £1bn a year even in fact if we’d just stayed in the EU we wouldn’t have to pay this at all.

The farmers must be spitting blood because we now have one way free trade which is not in our favour.

What a complete clusterfuck.

LoveSpringDaffs · 30/04/2022 07:33

JRM is a monumental TWAT, why do you care what he says/thinks?

WhatdoImean · 30/04/2022 07:35

Totally agree.

This is a cost of Brexit, which we are choosing not to implement... because it would cost too much, interfere with food imports etc. Meanwhile... UK exporters DO have to go through all these steps and requirements to export to the EU, meaning that as a result of Brexit, it now costs us more to import... whereas the EU can now import into the UK without that same cost - i.e. it means the farmers now face unfair competition.

This is above and beyond the cost that the various ports have had to pay to actually set up all the buildings etc.

This is scarily what the remain campaign mentioned would happen (increased friction on imports and exports) before the vote... and now we have the Minister for Brexit Opportunities claiming this is a benefit?? Weird weird world!

WhatdoImean · 30/04/2022 07:35

Costs more to EXPORT (typo - sorry)

longwayoff · 30/04/2022 07:42

YABU. Dont you know the word Fail doesn't feature in the He's-Smug world? This is clearly just a temporary hitch due to unavoidable world events and there's a rosy horizon just over there. And all opponents who disagree with this are obviously Labour voting dangerous revolutionary socialists who wish to overturn the established order of government ie the cushy number bestowed upon He's-Smug and his mates who have dug in for the long term.

No he’s not. He’s talking about checks at the NI border.

MissChanandlerBong80 · 30/04/2022 07:50

’Free trade is hugely advantageous to consumers’ - thank goodness we left that awful free trading area we were part of!

FatOaf · 30/04/2022 07:55

Young Master Jacob and his toadies repeatedly said during the referendum campaign that British people would willingly accept higher prices if it meant "regaining" our "independence" (from what, I've no idea). Now he says we won't.

I would love to see some figures on how much smuggling has increased during this period of reduced/absent border checks. Moneybags Sunak is still pushing his freeports to encourage more smuggling (which I presume he has a financial interest in) and tax fraud (which we all know he has a financial interest in).

Mummyoflittledragon · 30/04/2022 08:10

So basically anything we export is subject to increased checks. Anything we import is not. Terrible plan and yes, something, which was highlighted by remaing but we are supposed to just forget. Oopsie. There’s a link to a rejoin petition on that Twitter thread.

longwayoff · 30/04/2022 08:38

I'd be happy to rejoin. 26? countries would have to agree. I feel that is unlikely. Thanks Farage and your fellow swivel-eyed loons.

Florenz · 30/04/2022 08:51

I don't understand why people are still going on about Brexit. It's happened. People voted for it. We are out of the EU. Businesses have had 6 years to adapt to it. Why is it still a thing that people are arguing about?

IpanemaFleur · 30/04/2022 08:55

Florenz it hasn’t been fully implemented yet because it’s too damaging. That what people are saying. Discussing the impacts of Brexit is not the same as arguing about it.

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 30/04/2022 08:58

‘I don't understand why people are still going on about Brexit. It's happened. People voted for it. We are out of the EU. Businesses have had 6 years to adapt to it.’

I’m sometimes frustrated that I’m incapable of thinking so simplistically. My life would be happier if I were able to float through life unable to think critically.

If trade deals are still to be done and Jacob RM has yet to instil the full Brexit on border checks then it clearly isn’t done and dusted yet regarding the thousands of loose ends is it?

Barbadossunset · 30/04/2022 09:03

Op, there is a Brexit topic - maybe post there?
There are loads of different posters on the threads and it’s a very friendly and welcoming place where all opinions - pro and anti Brexit - are welcome.

newnamethanks · 30/04/2022 09:07

Brexit isn't done. The UK has been 'done' by the grasping chancers who've brought this upon us. As you will realise pp when you finally catch-up with current events. Meanwhile those of us who are watching the established instutions of this country bring defunded and dismantled around us are blaming the people who brought it about. Seems reasonable.

Heliotropium · 30/04/2022 09:17

Idiot. You can be sure that the right wing press either won't bother to report it or will totally twist what he said to make him look good

Heliotropium · 30/04/2022 09:23

You can tell who the brexit voters are on this thread. They feel uncomfortable even seeing a thread title that reminds them how damaging brexit is. So uncomfortable they want it to disappear

newnamethanks · 30/04/2022 09:31

Anyone on here old enough to remember the 'poison oil' stories from Italy? So glad to see we're opening up our food imports for any old unregulated crap to be imported for us to eat. Hurrah ! Regulations? Down with all of them, impeding possible profit-making for the few, not the many. Waves to exP&O employees, you're just the first.
