To think where you live dominates how you dress?

Not just the climate/weather, I mean the styles of the locals.
I lived in a really outdoorsy place for a decade, never thought about it much but tended to wear outdoorsy stuff, most of the shops sold it, and to some extent, most others had some semblance of similarity.

Then I moved to an urban area, no weather related stuff at all, most people hardly bothered to wear raincoats or weatherproofs in winter, and sportswear /leisure was the most common style such as basic leggings, jeans and tee, guys in footy garb, etc.

When I visit friends in my closest city it is quite different there too, obviously, but tons of dresses everywhere! Lots more colour and variation.

I also think we now have much longer summer months than we used to, and less rain. This will also affect how we dress too. As a nation we are usually so tied up with 'bad' weather and buying the perfect coat, etc, but maybe this will change from now on. Last summer seemed to last from march to november here!

So we like to think we are original to some extent with what we like to wear, but I strongly suspect where we live has a bigger influence than we are aware of.

Well in my London days I was mostly either in a suit or in my raving gear. When I lived in Ireland the weather was shite so it was more humpers and raincoats. And now I'm in Australia I barely wear shoes for half the year and no longer own a coat. So, yeah.😃

Jumpers not humpers ffs! 😆

I moved up to Edinburgh from Cheshire and noticed a bit of a difference. Then I went to Morningside and found I fitted right in. Grin

@OutlookStalking what towns do you live near? Tracksuit and white trainers is not my thing, but no issue if that’s what others like - I’m from Edinburgh where most things go. Glasgow on the other hand tends to have a smarter vibe. I meant it more about what you don’t wear than what you do sometimes. I don’t own wellies (hunter or otherwise), sea salt anything, lol. The only barbour jacket in my house is owned by the dog..

Not for me.
I've lived rurally up north, midlands city, and now small town in the south in the last 25 years and I've dressed the same in all. In fact some of the clothes I wear now I have worn in all three places.

It is interesting how people with similar lifestyles, living in similar climates, can have very different fashion "norms". The winter coat at the school gate thread last winter was interesting that groups of similar aged woman doing the same thing (school run) had different fashions in different parts of the country, even though most were buying from national chain shops.

I remember reading something last year from a journalist who was lamenting not knowing what was in fashion as she'd worked from home for so long, and normally her style cues came from people watching in her city, not from fashion magazines or shop windows/clothing websites.
