to ask Christians about dinosaurs...

EastYorksLass · 29/04/2022 17:46

This is a serious question - so I have been thinking a lot lately about whether God exists, the meaning of life and why is the world in such a terrible state... been thinking about going to church but still feel I am on the fence. One question which has really got me thinking (after watching dear old David Attenborough... ) is where do dinosaurs fit into all this. Sorry if this sounds very weird but I would love to hear an explanation!

OP posts:

Asking for them to be removed is still an effect on my life as are the holidays.

You can be attacked for wearing any football strip.

not here.

I dont celebrate the christian festival of Christmas no, I'm not Christian.

The op doesn't say only Christians can reply.

No other non Christian has been asked why they are replying.

It has also moved on a fair bit from just dinosaurs

I’m not asking why you’re replying. I’m pointing out that you are incorrect in your belief that your opinion is the one the thread is asking for, as - in your words - “the point” of the thread. .

in the same way that if the thread was, “Buddhists, what do you believe about ghosts?” or “Hungarian speakers, what do you think of opera?”, it wouldn’t be my opinion the thread was asking for, and I would be incorrect to believe that my specific views were what the thread was about.

You are of course perfectly entitled to believe incorrect things.

So no Turkey and gifts in your house? No religious holiday celebrations, just every day the same?

@Topgub There just trying to wear you down and shut you up. Deflection so they don't have to give any real answers.

Lol.

They dont know me but I recognise the tactics

‘Real answers’ to what?

Topgub · 30/04/2022 18:50

Definitely no turkey, bleugh

Culturally we exchange gifts around that day but it has nothing to do with Christianity.

Very few of the traditions around Christmas do. Not even the date of Christmas.

All nicked from other cultures/festivals

woodhill · 30/04/2022 18:50

Do other faiths believe in evolution and dinosaurs

shabbaboot · 30/04/2022 18:51

Yes there you go, this is exactly what I'm talking about deflection. If all else fails act innocent or dumb. Must be the latter.

Topgub · 30/04/2022 18:51

I thought the thread was posted to create discussion around beliefs rather than a genuine proposal for Christians to explain dinosaurs.

My mistake

PlasticineMeg · 30/04/2022 18:53

Are you asking Muslims, Jews, Sikhs and Buddhists too or are Christians the only faith that’s acceptable to challenge now?

GoldenOmber · 30/04/2022 18:53

Well, it’s not my thread, but it does say “to ask Christians about dinosaurs” in big letters at the top.

i guess if you want to interpret that symbolically rather than literally, in accordance with your pre-existing beliefs about how MN religion discussions should work?

So why that day then? Why not vote with your feet and have it on literally any other day of the year?

To be fair OP said she's been thinking about going to church so presumably she wants to get a vibe of whether Christianity is right for her.

GoldenOmber · 30/04/2022 18:56

I don’t know what the other major religions believe about dinosaurs in general. I did meet a young-Earth creationist Orthodox Jew once, but I don’t think young-Earth creationism is a particularly mainstream Jewish position.

Topgub · 30/04/2022 18:56

I dont have any preconceived ideas about how mn religious discussions work.

I'm learning they work the same as any other I've had though.

Not surprisingly.

Exactly what answers are you looking for? Let’s all try to help.

Topgub · 30/04/2022 18:59

We do sometimes have it on different days.

I work Christmas day a lot as do other members of my family.

You asked for examples of how religbeliefs affected my life, thats 1. How they have seeped into and shaped cultural practices. Would your kids be upset if you had Christmas in September?

Are you Christian? Do you celebrate a religious Christmas?

No, I’m not Christian. I don’t have a religious christmas. I have no beliefs in any kind of religion, god or an afterlife. I don’t believe in psychics or mediums or ghosts.

But that doesn’t give me the right to ridicule those who do.

Because I know a lot about theology.

What answers do you want?

Topgub · 30/04/2022 19:17

I cant remember what I asked now?

Why would god design the universe via the big bang and evolution so a wee human could evolve and worship them.

Something like that. How does ID relate to the bible without backwards shoehorning?

The theological answer is god isn't human and doesn't have to live by human rules (god moves in mysterious ways etc etc)

I dont need help with theology. I like discussing beliefs. Questioning them. Challenging them.

But that has been answered though - scientists have gotten pretty close to the Big Bang but not that actual bang. So we don’t have any other explanations scientifically for that first burst of life.

And that’s where faith begins. I also like the theory posted earlier about the God Gap.
