To ask if you wash your meat?

No, not another penis beaker!

Today two colleagues in another department were talking about their dinner and it came up that they both wash their meat with a mix of lemon, water and salt before cooking it.

AIBU or is that not the norm? Or have I been feeding my friends and family dirty meat my entire adult life?!

@pedropony76

See the section under Washing meat

www.food.gov.uk/safety-hygiene/cleaning

Basically you should not wash raw meat.

Even the US CDC say consumers should not wash raw meat and they spray it with chlorine solution in the US food industry

@CorsicaDreaming I literally couldn’t care less on what the advice is.

Africans & West Indians have been doing this for GENERATIONS. I’m yet to get sick once due to ‘contamination’ or whatever else people are saying on this thread. If you don’t want to wash your meat then no problem but showing me links isn’t going to do anything for me. I will not season meat that hasn’t been washed. Once you clean and then wash your meat and see all the gunk that floats about in the bowl, maybe you’d care. Then again I’m sure a lot of people wouldn’t

Yes, (Jamsican heritage) the meat is placed in a dedicated bowl glass or metal. Then bathed and cleaned in water with lemon or vinegar. So, not lots of water being splashed around!

Once finished, the bowl, sink and area is cleaned with bleach.

This. You're more likely to get ill from not washing the meat.

I don't want to eat something someone somewhere could have touched right after scratching their arse, thanks.

For the same reason, I wash all fruit and vegetables too.
