HOLIDAY INSURANCE

Ok so not a AIBU but posting for traffic or someone who is/was in a similar postion

Everything is hypothetical at the moment

Holiday booked in June for 2 weeks in Wales. Has been booked since we were there last year.

In early April DD saw an ENT consultant and is now on an urgent waiting list for Adenoids/Tonsils removed and for Grommets to be fitted. Consultant said op should be no more than 3 months, but given the current situation with the NHS who knows.

I've contacted the holiday let today, we are due to pay the rest of the holiday next week. I've casually enquired about cancellation policy etc should the operation date land at the same times as our holiday and they have come back saying they strongly recommend holiday insurance to cover any costs due to cancelling - but surely we wouldn't be able to get holiday insurance now knowing that our DD is on this waiting list?

The holiday let say that if we cancel within 6 weeks we're not entitled to any money back - which would mean us losing £1600.00

As I say, all completely hypothetical, but if the situation were to arise, what would you do? And am I right in thinking that we couldn't get holiday insurance knowing there is a risk of cancelling?

I would try to contact an insurance company to see if they would accept a policy under those circumstances. If they will then take it, it will save you a lot of stress and anxiety.

You will not get travel insurance that covers the risk of cancellation because of your daughter’s proposed operation. Perhaps the holiday let would consider changing the dates?

If you get insurance it won’t cover any medical condition awaiting further tests or an operation. If your consultant said 3 months, then operation would be in July, so you would be able to go in June.

When I was on the wait list for an op I was asked to provide any dates I couldn't do. I don't know if all hospitals do this, or how much it is taken into account. Worth calling the wait list team to ask?

Otherwise, try a company called InsureWith (or InsuranceWith) they're really good for travel insurance with pre-existing conditions, so may be able to cover. Might be £££ though.

I agree with viques. But definitely don't arrange insurance and not tell them that your DD is on the waiting list- for insurance you have a duty to tell the insurer any relevant information so if you don't they could easily refuse to pay up. I'd say that if you try to claim due to an operation they may well ask whether you were having any treatment or envisaged the op at the time of taking out the policy and if you lie then it would become fraud.

As an alternative, would the holiday let allow you to keep the booking but re-arrange for a later date when your DD will definitely have had her op?
